@TedMD Your interpritation isnt accurate. Sales tax does not apply to groceries.
Normally the GOP are idiots but moving to a purely sales tax based system makes a LOT of sense, in general, but it has to be done with more care. Only way such a system would work is if tax levels were better correlated to the luxury of an item. We do this already but the current way of doing it is far too coarse to work in a sales-tax only system.
Facts, political
@TedMD Its usually paid everytime money changes hand for a product.. so you pay at the counter when you buy the item, and the store paid when they bought the items to stock them too.
Facts, political
My interpretation is accurate
Republicans want their prior tax cuts for their donors to be paid out of pocket by the buyer of products to the seller of product at the counter. That is what sales tax means
That means the cost of everything goes up.
Does this means they support raising wages so the consumer can afford the product? No, it's purely selfish and predatorially unethical
Facts, political
@TedMD Well nop your original statement was not accurate. Groceries are sales tax exempt. so no tax is paid on them at the counter or otherwise. So your statement about paying your taxes for them with your groceries isnt accurate.
That said it isnt really important about the groceries, and focusing on that detracts from the more important part about what I said, how sales tax makes sense, particularly if structured correctly.
If you do it correctly then luxury items get more tax than non luxury items. So people who waste money on nonessentials carry the bigger tax burden while those who can only afford essentials bear little or no tax burden.

@freemo If there's anyone else that doesn't understand what I meant then I guess that's my mistake in communication. If not, it may be linguistic translation and usage
I would like to know who you recommend as a neutral economic mediator on the topic please because trickle down is bs and getting rid of the irs makes no sense, also a 30% sales tax will raise the cost of everything on the shelves and whoever can hold the most warehouse space can afford bargain
Facts, political
@TedMD So a lot of different things flying around here... first off lets just agree your initial comment, being a miscommunication, isnt really that important to the topic, clearly i thought you meant the tax ont he groceries themselves, but you didnt.
But to the point, I wouldnt say getting rid of the IRS is such a stupid idea, but it is stupid if all they wanted to do was tax everything at 30% even. Thing is, I dont think thats the case, though even the reality is lacking. A 30% tax rate or other high sales tax, on goods such that luxury goods are taxed higher than neccesities would be a great solution. It would eliminate the IRS, create a fair system where those who spend moneyu on luxury carry the bulk of the tax burden, and ensure those so close to poverty that most of their expenses are food and neccesities would be tax free. In the end it would achieve a far superior system of taxation with far less overhead.
That said as usual the system being proposed here doesnt have the proper elements (like tax rates determined by the luxury of the purchase) to make that a reality.

@freemo is sales tax paid at the counter?
