What is the logic behind wanting to ban them?
Ahh ok, we talking about systems that vent to the outside not the ones that vent directly into the room?
@freemo i don't know of any that vent into the room. Vented dryers heat the air, then dump the moist hot air outside, thus wasting the heat. Condensor & heat pump versions dry the hot air and don’t throw away the heat.
@koherecoWatchdog my dryer vents into the room, not sure how common that is though.
The condenser version, i guess it drains the water that it collects... interesting.
@freemo For laundry rooms that have no vent, some will run a duct to a bucket of water rather than cut a hole in the wall (e.g. some landlords won’t allow adding a hole). I suppose that’s only viable on electric dryers because gas dryers must dump the carbon monoxide.
@freemo Depending on the climate where you are, venting into the room is perhaps energy efficient in the winter but then inefficient the rest of the year as the a/c would then have to work against it. So perhaps vented electric dryers could be justified in regions that don’t get hot enough to need cooling systems but where heating is needed in the home.
Yes in fact as long as its cold enough out youd be running a heater then it is not just energy effecient, it is 99%effecient... effectively it uses no (additional) energy to run.
@freemo The poll should have given a region or climate scenario.
@freemo @koherecoWatchdog I've only ever had the ones that vent out the front - the heat, the moisture and the lint dust all together. (Yeah there's a filter - it doesn't catch everything.) Only for use in emergencies, when it's rained for weeks solid.
The ones ducted to outside seem like a modern miracle of health and efficiency in comparison!
@rhamphorhynchus @freemo Indeed if you neglect climate change venting outside is the way to go. Even if you benefit from heating the house by internally venting, most ppl probably don’t want the humidity & would then run a dehumidifier. AFAIK, no vented dryer is designed to do a heat transfer. It would make sense for the exhaust to heat ceramic tiles or something, then pass the fresh air intake over them.

@freemo @rhamphorhynchus This video is also worth a look, as it does a real-world power measurement between heat pump and conventional electric dryers: https://watch.thekitty.zone/watch?v=Nh-j0sWBEJA
@koherecoWatchdog wait, thry make dryers that dont expel the hot air from inside the dryer at all? How does the humid air get out?
@freemo Energy waste. Electric vented dryers in particular because the excessive waste yields no benefit over ventless designs.
