Thinking about how several states have laws banning people from taking newborn puppies away from their mothers before 8 weeks because it is traumatic—yet only 16 states (15 Dem & 1 GOP) and 0 federal laws mandate paid leave for new mothers.

USA treats dogs & puppies better than moms and babies😳

@QasimRashid Thats a stretch to say the least...

Paid leave is assuming that a company has an obligation to pay you for your own life choices... the company isnt having the baby, it doesnt want or benefit from the baby, why should it have to fund your activities.

Now dont get me wrong I am 1200% behind the fact that if youare financially struggling with a kid the state should help you.. but I dont think a company should have any obligation to encourage you to have kids... if the company wants to as an incentive to hiring great.

Now I would agree that a new mother should have a right to unpaid leave that is short and reasonable without it being cause to fire someone... but financially, that baby is YOUR responsibility, not the companies.

@freemo @QasimRashid In Canada, paid maternity & paternity leave is provided by the government. All the company has to do is *not fire you* for it. Many companies do top-up the money we get from the gov but that's optional & part of a benefits package to entice employees.

Simply not firing you for being a human being & having children is a pretty low bar to expect companies to meet.

I am perfectly ok for the paid leave to be paid for by the government **if** it is limited to people who are of low enough income that they need that help. If we are talking middle class and they are such low income they need government help to take a maternity leave then I'd say there are larger economic problems at play.. for lower class its understandable, though again in a healthy economy the lower class wouldnt be that large.

@QasimRashid

@freemo @QasimRashid In Canada it's capped at 55% of your income up to $60k CAD. So the rich certainly aren't getting paid to have babies.

I can't imagine why the US thinks this is so hard to solve. Especially if you don't want to 'rely' on immigration (based on the furor over the last several years), stop making it so hard to have children. 🤷‍♀️

@syntaxseed

I am not worried about "the rich getting paid to have babies"... and I wont speak to if 55% of 60K is a good limit or not, I am glad there is some limit at least. My point is, government assistance should be limited to those who dont make enough to afford it themselves, and even then should be conditional in such a way that improves the problem so they shouldnt need to ask for assistance in the future (ideally).

In my view if you need government assistance you should get it, this is regardless of if you have a baby.. but it should also be conditional on you commiting to additional training or education (paid for by the government) in a bid to try to raise your income so you wont need to come back and ask for money again.... regardless I certainly dont think it should be universal.

As for the US having a hard time solving it.. thats mostly because everyone argues so much and is so polarized reaching compromises on any issue is damn near impossible.
