@georgetakei I think you meant this to be a reply to something? No context.
Ahh my mistake. Thanks for the context!
@freemo @georgetakei I think he’s saying he committed an act of violence 👀
It’s a reference to #TryThatInASmallTown, an anti-violent crime song by #JasonAldean
@realcaseyrollins @freemo @georgetakei Nah. It doesn't take much. He probably walked down the street while holding his husband's hand.
@SharonGibson3 Sad to say but with regression in society with regards to LGBTQ of late that is a lot closer to the truth than it used to be a few years ago.
@SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei The song is about violent crime, that’d be the only thing to try in order for the reference to make sense.
Unless I’m missing something, and something in the song says something about gay people holding hands? 🤔
I think what is being said here is that many people are so hyperbolic about LGBTQ that they might describe them as holding hands as violent.
Obviously this is meant as a bit of an exaggeration itself, but the general premise is valid.
@freemo @SharonGibson3 @georgetakei IDK, there’s nothing in the song about homosexuality at all. Seems like a logical leap made to further a certain left wing narrative.
But also to be fair there’s more than violence being described here
Sure, the left is adopting it as a warcry.. it doesnt need to reference LGBTQ for it to work as a message against violence.
Honestly nit picking my way through this isnt really worth my time, they can use whatever songs they want to represent their ideals. Its mostly aesthetics, I care much more about the material matters.
@freemo @realcaseyrollins @georgetakei As I said, the song promises violence for flag-burning, which is protected speech. You can be obtuse all you want, that line alone implies harm to others who *aren't* committing any crimes.
@SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei I will concede with you on that point 🤝🏾
@realcaseyrollins @freemo @georgetakei There's reference to flag burning, with the dare, "Try that in a small town." (Flag burning is the method used in the disposal of old flags; it's protected speech as well, yet the song promises violence toward such an offender.)
So, there are lots of acts that one had better not try, even today, in a small town, including being Black after sundown. Aldean's message is loud and clear.

@SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei Wait so only black people burn flags? That’s new to me, a black man.
Guess I gotta go burn a flag then, if I wanna stay black. I should prolly vote for #JoeBiden too.
"If you don't burn flags, you aint black" -- Joe Biden
@realcaseyrollins @freemo @georgetakei That you conflate flag burning with sundown towns is a wonder.
@SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei I didn’t do that, you did.
So I guess you see why that point doesn’t make sense then 👍🏾
@realcaseyrollins@social.teci.world @SharonGibson3 @georgetakei That’s what this “Casey Rollins” account has done on here for 5 years at least - conflate issues and make bad faith arguments against progressives. He also has many accounts across different instances because so many people block him but he has a reply guy compulsion. Just FYI.
@TonyStark @georgetakei
It was like arguing with a drunk. I blocked him.
@SharonGibson3 @realcaseyrollins @freemo @georgetakei Not to mention half the clips in his video are people protesting after cops murdered black people. Funny how mr. totally-not-racist has that lumped together with carjackings on the list of reasons the Aldean Gang will come at you with his grandaddy's gun.
@NIH_LLAMAS @SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei Is it okay to be violent because a police officer murdered someone?
@realcaseyrollins It is always ok to be violent so long as the use of that violence reduces the overall net amount of violence and suffering in the world over time.
@freemo Well, now we’re getting into supervillain territory 😂
I of course condone violence as a means of self defense.
@realcaseyrollins The devil is always in the details... Its a valid and objectively correct principle... its application tends to be far from objective as we have no good way of predicting, let alone measuring, suffering.
@freemo True; I generally only support violence in self defense, or in the case that someone declares or plans to attack your violently
@realcaseyrollins The problem is that really isnt much of a restriction at all...
"I gave the murderer the death penalty in self-defense so he couldnt go on murdering more people if he ever escaped"
@realcaseyrollins @SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei Flipping the bird isn't violent. Lots of things aren't violent. You can't tell the difference, and we know why.
Flipping the bird isn’t violent.
Is that what they were doing in the video? Or were they being violent?
I saw this one dude with a bird that I assure you, if that bird got flipped some people were getting smacked up and hurt pretty damn good.
@NIH_LLAMAS @realcaseyrollins@social.teci.world @freemo @georgetakei I ran across this meme this morning.
The song is about *who* is doing that crime and what citizens will do about it.
Video was filmed where a mob dragged a black man out of jail and lynched him for an alleged crime.
I'm sure that's just a crazy coincidence.
@realcaseyrollins @SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei It specifically calls out cussing a cop to his face and burning a (presumably American) flag, both of which are Constitutionally protected under the First Amendment. That, of course, is just the lyrics and ignoring the visual symbolism of performing in front of a courthouse where a man was lynched.
But, you know, it's a free country; if you like the taste of boot that much feel free to keep licking.
@pooserville @SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei You’re right on the first amendment arguments, but the song still doesn’t say anything about homosexuality.
@realcaseyrollins @SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei If you listen to a song that says "we will react violently to your expressing your first amendment rights, because small town" and don't think about other well-publicized examples of small town violence including sundown towns and gay bashing, well, you do you.
For myself, when I hear "we will commit violence in defense of our 'values'" I am unlikely to believe they compartmentalize that, because I know Southern history.
@pooserville @SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei For my part, I don’t like presuming intent, especially nefarious intent, about people when that intent is not matched by speech or actions. Since the song says nothing about black people, it seems sanest to not think that he’s talking about black people (although if you view black people as violent, I can see why you might think he was talk about black people).
But again the lines that also include first amendment expressions are pretty problematic.
Intent is easy... everyone is looking out for themselves.. if they intend to help you its only because that is in some way in their own favor.
@realcaseyrollins @SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei
There's the whole sundown and lynching aspect backed up by the video. He's calling out against flag disrespect while standing in front a flag hanging from the point where they lynched Henry Choate.
If he's truly unaware of what a sundown town is and what his "this is how we take things into our own hands where I'm from" fits into history then that is far, far scarier.
@joncruz @SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei Why do you think he knows the history of where he shot the video? Do you think he picked the location himself?
And where in the song does it refer to sundown towns, y’all keep referring to it but it doesn’t seem related to the song.
@realcaseyrollins @SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei he's the artist. He's responsible for knowing. If you can ask any local what the history of the building you're featuring but then *don't* that's on you.
I think more importantly is that he was raised in the city but is putting on the trappings of small town life either without knowing the implications or is intentionally blowing dog whistles for sales.
He's said he wants to get back to "the good old days" but doesn't know abput lynchings?
@realcaseyrollins @SharonGibson3 @freemo @georgetakei
As to sundown, it is on its face explicitly pro vigilante violence. In context it sound very pro lynching (I hear no mention of 'our law officers will arrest you and you will be prosecuted via due process'). Looking at the other things the story sounds just like what happened in sundown towns.
What's next, are you going to tell me the song Strange Fruit is not about racism because it does not explicitly say white people were perpetrators?!
@realcaseyrollins @freemo @georgetakei An "anti-violent crime song" with video shot in front of the Maury County Courthouse. GTFO with that bullshit.
@colorfiend @freemo @georgetakei So you didn’t read the lyrics then
@realcaseyrollins @freemo @georgetakei Yeah, I did. And when you threaten people with the gun your granddad gave you, well, it stopped being anti-violent.
You're not going to change my point of opinion on this. Reading through your timeline, I am not going to change yours. Have a lovely day,
@colorfiend @freemo @georgetakei Guns can’t be used in self defense? 🤔
@realcaseyrollins @freemo @georgetakei
I think you mean a violent anti-crime song.
@kinyutaka @freemo @georgetakei Insofar as self defense is violent, yes 🤷🏾♂️
What’s so great about crime anyways? Isn’t that bad?
@realcaseyrollins @freemo @georgetakei
Just trying to be more succinct. But when you look at the lyrics, they don't talk about a lot of crimes. They do mention a carjacking, but they also talk about disrespecting the flag. As if that was on par with each other, and deserved death or beatings.
@kinyutaka @freemo @georgetakei They talk about crimes more than disrespecting the flag 🤷🏾♂️
For the record I do think that the lines about burning the flag or cursing out a cop are questionable. But frankly there’s not enough substance to the song to make the outrage proportionate in any way IMHO. There’s not even an indication that there’s an intent to do more than scare the offending person out of town, so I don’t know exactly how violent #JasonAldean’s intents were with the lyrics.
@realcaseyrollins @freemo @georgetakei
It has no subtlety, though. The song talks about how he's got a gun handed down from his grandfather, and that you won't get far in a small town.
And to punctuate the point, the music video features locations known for race riots.
@kinyutaka @freemo @georgetakei I mean that’s pretty vague. What do the lyrics say that he’ll do with his gun?
@realcaseyrollins @freemo @georgetakei
Does everything have to be directly spelled out for it to count as a threat?
@kinyutaka @freemo @georgetakei No, but it’s best if it’s not made up
