Cheerleaders Dressing Like Natives is Not OK

Recently, the “Indianettes” drill team from Port Neches-Groves, Texas appeared at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, where they were dismayed to learn the park now has a policy preventing them from wearing their traditional headgear, a mockery of Native ceremonial war bonnets. That didn’t stop the team from sporting feathers in their hair and other offensive gear, or supporters from chanting “Scalp ‘em!”

Let’s flood Port Neches-Groves with emails telling them to change their name and stop with the offensive and harmful cultural stereotypes!

@anna_lillith As a proud native american I can say with confidence, neither me, nor the vast majority of Native Americans find this offensive. Obviously while there is plenty of racism worth focusing on this is not where white peoples focus should be, focus on the deplorable conditions at reservations and mistrestment of sacred land instead of wasting your time on stuff like this.

Thanks for caring though, but no thanks.

@freemo thank you for your comment and your opinion. As this is a petition by Lakota Law, a native organization , there certainly are natives who find this offensive, I personally find this offensive and inappropriate, too and there are several posts with the hashtag NotYourMascot, so it seems to be an issue for people even though for you it is not.

1) Anyone, including whites (non-natives) can start petitions on lakotalaw.

2) The use of a hashtag is likewise not an indicator

While you may be able to find some native somewhere that finds this offensive, neither of the two points you indicate in anyway suggestive of that and I assure you, the overwhelming majority of native americans arent worried about mascots. In fact we are happy to hear our culture is appreciated enough to be embodies in mascots as a symbol for others.
