Last new years I decided against getting fireworks. It's just too harmful to the environment. Instead I build this "reusable" rocket out of a d1 mini microcontroller and a WS2812B LED-strip. It is "lit" by pushing a button.

The kids really like starting the rocket.

@daniel_westhof Im curious in what way you feel its harmful to the environment. Not disagreeing with you just never looked into it. Is it the chemical aspect, or the noise pollution?

@Zipkid @freemo @daniel_westhof

It is a topic I am curious about myself. This morning I saw a HN submission about perchlorate pollution by fireworks. There's all kinds of chemicals being used and metals for coloring, etc. that land in the environment.

In the Netherlands fireworks on the New Year are like this crazy warzone.. people buying for 1,000's of dollars of the stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if in that single hour we got to a full percentage point of yearly CO2 equivalence.
