@freemo IIRC, obviously your statement is correct at one level. Many studies have shown pretty strongly that there's no causal link between, say, violent video games and real-life violence. But I think the relatively-recent rise in anti-Asian violence (a subject near and dear to my heart) points to a much subtler effect.

My hypothesis is that when X number of isolated people harbor anti-Asian hatred (for example), but all of society is collectively telling them that's wrong, they mumble and grumble and keep their hatred to themselves, but when that same number of people are no longer isolated, but find themselves supported in large numbers by something like a large online community, a prominent political leader, or both, well, clearly the mask comes off, and the violence becomes very real.

This is why people are rightly (IMO) worried about the limits of speech on the internet.

Another example: there have been people angry at the government for decades, but it seems like it took Facebook connecting them and feeding them information they wanted to see about how to act on that hate, plus a prominent political leader spouting related nonsense, for them to travel to Washington DC and try to overthrow the government.

Seeing hateful nonsense isn't going to turn you or me into a hateful person. It isn't going to turn anyone who isn't already hateful into a hateful person. But leaving it available provides a very thin patina of credibility, and since information on the internet is not generally divorced from the people posting it, it also provides a means of social connection when left in place.

One angry hateful person is a person. Angry hateful people online are literally the basis of a violent armed mob.

This is why I'm actually finding myself more and more against an "anything goes" policy online, while still very strongly supporting free speech in person.

If you're willing to stand on a street corner and speak what you believe is true, anybody that is willing to be seen associating with you can do so, and I don't think anybody should interfere. If you want to print a crank newsletter and pass it out, go ahead. In this is freedom!

But it takes nothing, less than nothing, to post nasty stuff online, where it lives side-by-side in the same interface with good information, granting it that very thin patina of credibility I mentioned, and associations are anonymous or hidden until it's too late.

I don't think that's so simple. I think all of this [waves at everything] demonstrates that.

So not really a serious bug, just that it doesnt render the link, otherwise works... still you might want to file an issue and i can look into it.

@beckymsm

Never said your an aweful human, neither are many who voted for trump or any of the other horrible presidents. You mean well, and are no worse or better than the Trump voters who mean well.

Yes I still can vote and own a home in the USA still, though I try to avoid the shithole that is the USA.

@atompunkray

@beckymsm

Heywhatever you got to tell yourself to justify the fact your supporting one of the biggest racists in politics today I guess.

Kamala was a disgrace too, not at Bidens level, but some of the stuff she has done is pretty disgusting too, especially when it comes to womens rights and justifying police brutality... But seeing as you support Joe its no surprise youd be ok with her too.

@atompunkray

@beckymsm

I totally agree with you, certainly wasnt my choice. He sickened all of us and hasnt been invited back since.

@atompunkray

@beckymsm

So what the guy believed that whites and blacks should be separate, that blacks should go to poor schools and live in poor neighborhoods and die by the millions.. so what he never showed an ounce of remorse and never once apologized.. people make mistakes and he still deserves to run one of the largest countries in the world...

Do you even hear yourself?

@atompunkray

@beckymsm

Learn? Grow? Seriously! Where did he make a sobbing public apology as to his attrocious actions? Never! He just silently started pandering and hoped we all would just forget his past... Why didnt he apologize you might ask? Aside from not actually being sorry its because he cared more about getting power than actually owning his mistakes. Because he knew if he did apologize that meant people would KNOW what he did...

Look if he gave some sobing apology and called out his own actions as deplorable maybe Id forgive him, but he didnt...

But yea, the DNC is fine, let them elect people who literally want to see entire races marginalized, make no public apology as a president or senator at any time, and its cool cause we are all just supposed to forgive racist pieces of shit.

Also as I said he is a "friend" of the family and has been over for dinner and even stayed the night. So if there is one thing I''m aware of it is the fact that he is still a piece of shit.

@atompunkray

@beckymsm

Lets start with the fact that they elected a man who is on record as saying he doesnt want "Racial jungles" and started his entire career trying to **stop** desegregation.. .Then once he realized how unpopular that was he pandered to minorities to a disgusting and disingenuous degree simply because its popular... Yes they elected the first man in my life time who literally got his start trying to keep segregation alive.

I could spend hours writing you a long list, but if I even need to list a single thing past this point and you dont think the dems are evil, then any other points I list are going to fall on deaf ears anyway.

@atompunkray

@beckymsm

Letting the GOP continue what it is does would indeed be evil, so would letting the DNC. There you go again focusing on the GOP like it is remotely relevant.

@atompunkray

@beckymsm

I dont recall saying it was my only solution. I am pointing out how silly the argument is that the dnc being evil is somehow ok and a good choice simply because of a bunch of reasons the gop is evil... the decision isnt between two choices so the existence of an even more (maybe) evil party is no excuse to promote your marginally less evil one.

@atompunkray

@beckymsm

Just look on the ballot every election, you get more than two choices to pick from, some people on the ballot are from other parties, some on the ballot have no party affiliation at all. Christ you can write in a name if your in a pinch.

@atompunkray

@beckymsm

Its always very telling when the overwhelming majority of people who support the dnc spend all their time arguing how much the gop sucks, a sure sign they have nothing to offer themselves.. Its almost like they dont realize we have several other options besides the two parties destroying peoples lives.

"Join the DNC, where we destroy lives marginally less then the GOP. Oh and remember if you dont vote for us ya ain't black" ::eye roll::

@atompunkray

@beckymsm

The ways the dnc is doing harm is different than the ways the gop harm. Plus ive made it clear im no fan of the gop. So listing a bunch of ways the gop sucks, which i mostly agree with, is doing nothing to progress your argument.

@atompunkray

@beckymsm @freemo you’re free to do so. Just don’t be surprised when you have trouble convincing ppl to vote Democrat. Maybe the Dems should focus less on how they can spin “business as usual” to appeal to millennials and zoomers, and focus more on actually sticking up for working people and marginalized people.

@westtexasjesus

Nah jesus **never** prea hed that people should be forced agsinst their will to help others at threat of arrest at gunpoint. In fact leftwing and rightwi g ideals are very contrary to jesus's teachinggs.
