@lupyuen damn you you posted the wrong link!
@lupyuen I need tbis so so bad
I think common sense will lead most to realize masks are probably useful for many but not all airbornse diseases. There are reasonable ways to reason about it where masks could even cause a greater soread of some diseases, maybe, when used by the general public and used improperly (whicb lets face it is most people).
That said i think we can all agree we just dont have good studies that can show it was effective in the case of covid, but we do t have evidence it was ineffective either.
@post @freemo @feld your point is flawed for many reasons:
- first the summary of evidence of non homogeneous and low quality studies doesn't give you an increased quality of evidence, this is the foundation of MAs and they knew, so they state quite clearly what we can say and what we can not with those results
- second, It seems that you miss the idea behind hypothesis testing and you are doing one of the biggest mistake in biostat: absence of proofs is not a proof itself
The ironic thibg is the actual wording of the reciew, whicb is usmnarized to "we dont have good studies to draw any solid conclusions about the effectiveness of masks" is itself an antimasker win. But by trying to manipulate the study and claiming it shows masks have 0 effectiveness is so blatantly dishonest tbat you took sometbing tbat could have been a win and instead just used it to discredit yourself.
Where do you get thst from.. their original version quite clesrly states what i said. Ut people misinterprited what they said to erroneously claim they meant what you said.. so they are changing the wording to be more explicit so people like you dont try and put words in their mouth like you did.
@jerry As one of the earliest adopters of QTs, perhaps the first (QOTO had it for many years now) i can agree with all that, it is just a link with somenspecial formatting and behavior, and only marginally different from putting a post in your link.
I disagree about you last point tbat it needs diligant moderation and would say, no more so than people posting a link to a post would need...
@freemo @mc My Math background did get me involved in undergrad research alongside PhDs and many things that I should have received credit for.
There was a competition that might have been to replace an older system that had been publicly defeated. Perhaps I ended up homeless while working on this and I was treated like trash by faculty. Some areas of research are kept separate from everything else. I still won't talk about what it actually was but consider a part of infrastructure going down and what happens in the chaos. That's the last clue.
A while after that I was more seasoned in Comp Sci. I was doing research with equipment that only I could get. A select few believed in it and I got treated like shit again. My equipment, my money and my hard work were being mocked. I started my own personal research and poured my all into it.
I made sure to send links to the faculty and students who treated me so poorly. The links were to publications where my work was referenced by a legend. They did the impressive part of the work but my contribution was acknowledged.
So there's a killer comeback that only a few know of. The best part is that I was willing to credit the University in some way but I was roasted by faculty and students on my way to try to get them involved.
Perhaps I handled it like a Mathematician. They didn't get undeserved credit nor did I ever mention them by name so their name wouldn't be present in any of the work.
I don't believe I have ever made more than 20k in a year. I continually have problems with employment. I was treated nicely and encouraged by the right person and as a last resort, I showed a department that maybe they had a lapse in judgement. I still get angry about it but I pushed for changes that should have made a positive impact. They likely wouldn't credit me if my proposals were made into policy. Universities love to cover things up.
Just thought I'd share that little gem for those of you who had to deal with academia and its unique values.
@mc Nah the sellingyoursaelf part is easy, No more work than a resume and some expiernce.
No the key is being good in the first place :)
But yea if you cant do a good job at presenting yourself as good (even if you are)then you might have a hard time.
@mc just gotta impress people and get a portfolio to sell yourself thjen your gold.
@KitlerIs6 @AmpBenzScientist @mc Sure.
I mean I make 1.2 mil a year contracting and all my work relies heavily on my math background...
@AmpBenzScientist Dude mathematicians are paid a fortune :)
