@freemo well, now you can hang all sorts of things off your barrel without needing a rail :)

@freemo @drewfer Careful you don't end up like this guy:

news.yahoo.com/lawyer-dies-hid

(And is it weird that they used the word "tummy" in describing a fatal injury?)

@kilroy_was_here

Most ham radio software is abysmally written in almost every way. It is also rarely open-source so no one wants to help fix it.

@drewfer got a bit too close to a very large very powerful "super" magnet... my gun went flying and hit it. The combination of the shock plus the strong magnetic field magnetized it

I think ill take a 2 or 3 day trip to the mountains and do some shooting at the range... Really excited to try out the new configuration and to sight her in!

🎓 Dr. Freemo :jpf: 🇳🇱
My CQC (Close Quarters Combat) AR-15 build is complete! Features I added: * 45 degree angled fore grip * 45 degree angled backup iron sights * Sig...

@robryk I havent checked but based on how it hit the magnet I would imagine it would be N-S perpendicular to the barrel.

@BigMcLargeHuge @kilroy_was_here

APRS is based on AX.25, specifically the UI frame packet type... It is very similar in some ways to UDP.

@freemo Oooo I like that long-distance routing idea. I'm not against IGates, but at the same time they're one more thing to fail and another source of headaches. I'm all for simple.

@kilroy_was_here There are also a lot of things I want to do that will help the current APRS network.. like a better tool to analyze the aprs-is information to get better statistics on a station... like right now the same packet from multiple sources is usually dropped on sites like aprs.fi.. i want to include them so you can map every path of every packet and use that info to learn more about your station and other stations performance.

@kilroy_was_here The system would still support IGates to reduce network congestion.. but I want a system that doesnt **need** them to operate at long distances. But to do that you have to have some sort of smart mechanisms to address congestion. Which i have some good ideas on

@kilroy_was_here I am writing a new protocol I would like to see replace APRS, it is designed to be backwards compatible with APRS until the new protocol becomes pervasive enough to turn off backwards compatibility.

The new protocol is design to have better control over routing of packets both in terms of cross-band routing, and long-distance routing (many hops, not using IGates).

Past that core functionality there is a lot of other things that enable I'd like to do int he guture.

@freemo I can only imagine you shooting now and the bullets magically turning around to go back.

@trinsec Thankfully copper and lead is not magnetic... If i am using iron bullets I deserve to get shot int he face :)

@freemo I like my Vortex magnifier and have heard good things about Holosun’s, not sure if any of them come in FDE though. But there’s spray paint 🙃

@torparskytt Both of those are very well respected optic companies. let see how this sig I just ordered performs... I can always upgrade again.

I just bought some really nice domains for my project:

aprs-x.com (also got .org)
axps.org

I plan to use aprs-x for the protocol specification itself and axps for the software I am writing that will run it.

@BPStuart All those are valid points.. but we cant pretend hunter biden is not in the equation at all. The claim is that Biden used his political power to unfairly help his son. That seems like a very valid concern in principle. Whether it is the truth of the matter is up for debate of course, but its a valid concern all the same.

LOL so apparently I accidentally magnetized the barrel to my AR-15 ... DOH!
