@mjambon Cultural to some extent, but real circumstantial. Like in the USA people need tip to survive, not so much anywhere else. I dont see that as culture so much as legal circumstances.

@realcaseyrollins It has to be pretty deliberate. But i order way too much so it can happen a few times a year for me. Far more often the rever happens where I give a 40% tip for exceptional service (my maid gets 40% tip every time standard at this point)

@mjambon I suppose that also means if they are extra over the top helpful they also don't get extra tip?

@levisan I am guessing either here in philly people just shovel right away and are nice. Or perhaps we dont get that 3day window, not sure. Either way its not much of a problem here.

@levisan We dont just ignore them in winter. The sidewalks tend to be cleaned, by the owners of the home the sidewalk is in front of (as is the law)... I mean it sounds like around you people dont shovel, I have never witnessed that en masse. Here after a snowfall all of the sidewalks tend to be cleaned the very next day by the owners. If you dont you will get a nasty fine and can even have a lawsuite if someone slips and falls.

@LouisIngenthron

By the way, we can speculate all we want. but when we look at the data we actually see quite the opposite. Private companies show more of a tendency to have peak and dip short term profit chases than public companies.

Attached is an image from analysis from 2014 that demonstrates this, we see the private company has higher short term profits but a much bigger rebound after the fact. This is typical, private companies are known to be more volatile, on average.

@niclas

As someone who has been a board member, C-level, and owner is multiple companies, including most recently one that was effectively public, I can say this isnt really true.

All board members have a duty to look out for the best interest of the company. There is no implied sense of short term over long term in a public company. In fact our company largely prioritized and looked at profits much the same way before and after the process

The issue with public companies is quite the opposite, you cant get away with shady shit as easily since you are under a much closer watchful eye.

@LouisIngenthron

@LouisIngenthron no you cant remove board members simply for under reporting. Removasl of a board member requires both the approval of the board and its share holders and is a very difficult process. To even propose it you must be "person of interest" meaning you must hold considerable shares to even propose it. People with significant shares are in it for the long term as you cant dump your shares without causing your share price to fall and get far less than market value. So generally they wont be able to have the support to be impeached over short term profits since all the people who have that power are locked in to the longer term profits.

@LouisIngenthron yea but the owners dont get to dictate day to day operations. The board and people running the companyare not the faceless owners

@LouisIngenthron Yup, and public doesnt mean more growth either, sometimes it can mean less... private companies can and are as large as public ones

@niclas Thanks I appreciate the suggestion. We are only really looking for people who are likely to stay long-term. While contracting and consulting is fine they would not be short-term hires.

Feel free to share with anyone who may be interested though. Appreciate the help.

@icedquinn I dont know the specific book, but I do know the topic.. while they are supper useful if you understand them most people dont understand them (or much of what they use). Most people know how to use it and the math to do, but dont understand it.

@levisan REquiring people shovel their own pavements in front of their home, or else be fined, is the standard in the USA. This isnt something new, its how its been for a while.

@icedquinn ohh, yea i love imaginaries personally.

But yea we use that to model EE stuff all the time :)

Companies or at least their owners, need to realize going public shouldnt always be the goal. For the right kind of company going public is great, for the wrong kind it can mean the death of the company.

I've seen trying to go public, and the expense and compromises that go with it, cost way too many promising company's their future.

@icedquinn Im confused, how is non-euclidean geometry a reinvention of quanternions? They are just a higher dimensional form of vector that looses commutativity at the higher dimensions but otherwise is more or less of the same nature as at lower dimensions.

Am I missing some math tidbit here?

@niclas

AI/AGI/ML/Data Science in general.

Clinical/medical stuff will be our first targets out of the gate but the platform will be a general data science tool that can apply to any industry.

@niclas Sadly that is the difficulty here. WE have a pretty high-end ask for a dev, and with some specific skills many devs arent going to have.

That said if you feel you might be a fit for part of it we do jave intermediate and jr positions too. We generally try to pay a fair market value for your skills too, rather than paying for the title itself.
