@jasonesman Its easy to say when you;'ve nearly exterminate a people and soved them into small reservations with slum like conditions and no resources to sell ... yea at that point the victor saying "Ok lets just forgive and forget and move on from here". Forgiveness comes with actions that lead to redemption, I havent seen that in our history or our present.

We have never been a troll instance. Our rules have clearly stated since our founding 5 years ago tthat our users are expected to interact respectfully, if they dont they get booted. While our rules have expanded and matured that has always been a foundation of our rules.

When people accuse us of being a troll instance in the past do two things.. 1) Ask for a link to an example of trolling (or photo) 2) make sure the post was reported (it is always possible something can slip though)... 3) after making sure irs reported check to see if moderators take action (if its legit we would have and do).

@bonifartius So i just looked at the list... I do agree the soap box thing is nonsense but as far as I can tell no instances are blocked becaus eof it. In the notes it lists soap box but the reasons listed in each case is not soap box related.

As of the moment it appears 111 **known** instances have defederated to some degree from Mastodon.social. Most likely unknown instance count is much higher.

People are claiming this is a result on the article I wrote, which largely cited facts with photo evidence and effectively accused Eugen of caving to a Nazi's agenda.

I do **not** want to see anyone defederating from mastodon.social. However, my article presented the facts, made no suggestion to anyone to defederate. If those those facts cause people to get mad with Eugen and defederate, so be it, thats his fault for not being a better person, for not having a discussion about his decisions. I wont take blame simply for exposing truths, the reprocusions are on him not me.

The irony is what is happening to him is the same thing happening to me as explained in that article. The difference is what is happening to me is largely fueled by lies which Ive disproven. Cant say the same about Eugen

Anyway, I do hope all of you will stop defederating and start talking. I'd much rather see people try to talk to Eugen and tell him why he is wrong and get him to be better than anything else. Perhaps stand up to the misinformation you hear as well and do some fact checking so #QOTO doesnt get wrongly accused of lies while your at it.

@favus Yea I travel a lot so im constantly getting tested. So it keeps popping up even when i feel fine. If it werent for the constant testing I would have never known.

@favus I had it about 5 times.. Of those times i didnt notice I had it except for one of them. All other times i showed up positive but felt fine.

Our servers are hosted all over the world, we have a cloud of servers popping up and down... That said the load balancer for main QOTO is in france last I checked. That said you may even see different load balancers in different locations depending on where you access it from in the future.

I am suggesting that admins who are somewhat neutral on defederation, will do it when needed, but wont go crazy defederating either, they will and do easily cave to peer pressure and defederate from instances they otherwise dont want tto simply to prevent being blocked themselves.

no because it doesnt create clean little islands, sadly.. it creates fractured threads where everyone is talking and you cant see half the messages, and the messages you cant see are different than what someone else can see. It drives people to ultimately smaller and smaller islands.

The problem lies int he viral nature of the defederating... the current peer pressure is such that every server demands every other server block the same people they do, meanwhile each server has a different block list. When this plays out to completion everyone is forced into small niche islands and there is no fediverse, if you try to participate in a larger fediverse you are kicked out of even your small island, so no fediverse can exist by that point... it is headed there fast.

Some fracturing is fine... The issue here is two fold.. 1) the fracturing is happening bassed off gossip and not informed facts 2) people are threatening to defederate with anyone who doesnt defederate from the same people they do. This has a viral effect that could be quite harmful.
