I dont think money has too much to do with the topic at hand directly.
Mastodon is designed that no matter hyow large it becomes it would never be an issue since no one can or does control the whole thing.. Only way I could see a commons arising is if there is a megaserver in a few years with 80+ of the fediverse on it, then that one instance might be a commons but otherwise the whole network, no.
That said in such a network we may have a good argument to say that relays must be open to all parties if they are public.
@Pat @freepeoplesfreepress We already have laws in place that under certain circumstances prohibit the person who runs the infrastructure from having a say in peoples speech... basically we tend to create special protections for commons.
If I am an ISP and own a bunch of wire, even though its my wire and im a private company I can not legally moderate the content going over my wires...
In my view once a social media network becomes pervasive enough it falls under the same logic regarding commons as other structures.
@TruthSandwich i mean, language is weird like that. Its pretty common for all sorts of words to have multiple definitions, soemtimes completely contradictory (see: literally). Even if at some point people used it one way, or even if they use it that way now, as long as enough people use the same word to mean something else, then thats a definition too...
the fact is I hear neoliberal all the time and its bveen very common in the regions I've lived for at least a decade (north east USA) to mean what I described it to mean... Its more than established enough to be a valid definition in its own right. Any other definitions or usages are also valid, so if the usage is as common as you say then your definition is just as valid as the one I was using, no worries.
@TruthSandwich If your argument is just that neoliberal has been used differently at different points in time, sure I mean its not a proper noun, it is an adjective.. it is the same as saying "new-age liberal" or "newer liberal". While what is "new-age" changes though it will mean something different, in practice, at different points in time. In general its just a term to describe the difference between the major ideological shift in the democrats (and very possibly has been applied to more than one such ideological shift at different points in time).
@TruthSandwich At best you could show me that some people post about it in a context of reagan or as a slurr.. it would still be the overwhelming majority of examples I seen and weighted even less because its cherry picked (going out and explicitly trying to find examples of it, rather than a random sampling).
@TruthSandwich Again that has not been how ive seen it, and ive seen the term used pretty widely among my circles. That isnt to say somewhere else in some other circle people are using it the way you claim, but after many years of seeing the use of the term I've never seen that pattern.
@kjr it can be, the flavor is all off too though.
@lucifargundam I liike a good sweet potato, witht he appropriate amount of marshmallow on top like god intended :)... but not this shit!
@kjr Ill take that over the shit they sneak into food in Israel... for starters EVERYTHING must have sweet potato in it... for some reason they throw it in with pasta all the time, my italian ancestors are screaming in their grave!
@TruthSandwich I've heard neoliberal used for about a decade now to refer to newer big-govt type democrats... never once have I heard anyone equate it to reagan exclusively (though some may include him as one) nor have I ever heard it used as a slur. In virtually all cases I used it as a way to distinguish between libertarian mostly.
@TruthSandwich Except thats not what FDR said.. As was clearly stated by FDR, the purpose of the goverynment is to address the issues beyond the power of men and women to meet as individuals... Again that is a small govt claim it isnt a no-govt claim... the whole idea about small govt is yes we DO need the government for a bunch of things, but those things should be limited to the things individual men and women cant accomplish on their own.
@TruthSandwich No one is talking about the term "modern liberalism"... so not sure why you bring that up. Id argue modern liberalism is a subset of neoliberalism.. that is all modern liberalism is neoliberalism but not all neoliberals historically are part of modern liberalism...
Regardless bringing in a different term doesnt help much and im not sure the point.
@TruthSandwich Yuip, I dont see anything in that quote contradictory to what I said. For starters FDR's opinions dont represent the democrats overall, so lets be clear we are dealing iwth one persons historic opinion to begin with, and not the actions of the party.
Second even if we take his opinion as representative of the actions and opinions of the democrats of the time, it still isnt a contradiction to what I said... I didnt say they were for no government. The general mentality was "use government where it applies, but smaller is better all else being equal", or at least, that was the sentiment that was common growing up, and the sentiment I hear when I see this quote. Which lines up just fine with what I said.
@TruthSandwich not sure what conservaitves have to do with anything... As for FDR begin a protoypical modern liberal... no. that doesnt seem even remotely accurate when i compare them side by side.
