@TruthSandwich nah as someone who literally witnessed the shift thats just flat out wrong.. while the shift probably started before I was born I have seen a very clear shift from democrats being strongly small government in my youth to being big govt now. So I have seen a very clear shift from classic to neo personally that is hard to deny.. it gets a little cloudier when i look historical so its hard for me to put the line somewhere, and even then since the shift is over time the line would be a bit arbitrary... but regardless it is quite obvious to me that the more intot he past I go (in my life time) the closer to classically liberal the democrats acted.
@TruthSandwich Not really, as I said the line where democrats shifted from classically liberal to neoliberal is debatable but for many that line started at reagan and continued... for others that line began much later... Its a matter of opinion when you feel the democrat party shifted from a focus on personal freedom to collective freedoms
@TruthSandwich no in america liberal is used interchangable for classical liberal and neoliberal... Because of this ambiguity I use more descriptive adjectives and refer to libertarian types as "classically liberal" and democrats as "neoliberal", and apply the same for similar left vs right wing parties around the world where applicable.
This isnt just my personal preference but very common choice of language to be more descriptive among a large subgroup.. but yes most just use liberal and lump it all together.
@TruthSandwich I disagree, though the exact line where neoliberals start is debatable for sure... but no most all of modern liberals are neoliberals around the world, classically liberal is closer to libertarian where they want to maximize personal freedoms, neoliberals seek to maximize collective freedoms.
I think you just discovered the one legitimate reason ever to turn on search-safe feature :)
Well im not claiming obama did bad on unemployment, nor am i disagreeing with the fact that some of his success for the economy overall bled into the rest of the world. All Im saying is that when it comes tot he unemployment rate that Trump achieved, that was very much his doing, and only looks like a good thing on the surface, it was NOT a good choice. But bad as it was it did get him a legitimate record unemployment rate that was his doing.. he just screwed everyone over to get that number in other ways....
But it would be inaccurate to say that record number was due to obama is the point, it was due to Trump..
@LouisIngenthron The wikipedia definition is a bit too limiting as it implies public utilities are limited to infrastructre, they arent.. goods (like hand delivered coal) also falls under public utility, so it includes goods and services and does not neccesseraly require the maintainince of a public infrastructure (though that is typical).
For example in philly oil is delivered in trucks to home. It is a public company and classified as a public utility... there is no infrastructure, just the sale of the oil.
Here is a better definition:
"A public utility is an entity that provides goods or services to the general public. "
Text messaging and email would be entierly limited to dick pics at that point. the good thing is, since you know everything, you only send it to people who actually want them :)
No a public utility is different.. a public utility is just any company at all whose goods/services are availible for purchase to the general public. We are **not** talking about public utilitieis here at all.
What you are probably thinking of is common carriers, and yes we **are** talkingt about something **related** to common carriers, but not a common carrier itself, similar, but we are discussing a common **utility** not a common **carrier**... common means the same in both though,, and "commons" in US law have certain protections, and those differ based ont he type of commons we are talking about, common carriers have different protection than common land (such as sidewalks), and different protection still than common utilities.
@ar I never said anything of the case.. just pointing out your personal expiernce doesnt seem to be a compelling data point.
common utilities arent defined by if they are roads or endpoints.. they apply to physical spaces to and tons of ideas... a common utility is anything that provides a utility (a common need such as communications) and is common to the community.. So facebeek as a common means of communication is a common utility. The fact that it exists on layer7 rather than layer 1/0 is not all that relevant.
@StefanThinks You forgot to link to the GoFundMe
2 people not being friendly for you and needing to be cut out of your life and being republican is hardly a good argument... I mean 2 isnt a very high number.. I mean I had 2 black people who wound up not being my friend once and I had to cut them off, I dont assume all black people are bad cause I've had that happen..
What im saying is when you look at these charts you have to normalize for the global trend to get a sense of how much of it is ourpolicies vs global economy... If you look at obamas trend it largely matches the shape of the global eveonomy with no delay. So you see obama still improving unemployment on his own, but only at a marginally higher rate thant he global background. Suggesting a normalized chart would have obamas rate much lower than a cursory glance at the chart might suggest.
Likewise trumps rate post covid in terms of how fast unemployment dropped back to normal was record breaking itself and many orders of magnitude a higher rate of unemployment recovery than the global. suggesting Trumps unemployment rate of change was far greater than Obamas, since the original chart before normalization shows this and would be more pronounced post-normalization....
But thats the weeds... as we said we KNOW Trumps QE would do just that, have insanely good very short term results on unemployment, so there is no disputing he beat out obama on that metric by leaps and bounds .. but again he poisoned the well to do it.
And no one here is sayign Trump had a successful policy... he got the employment rate, legitimately super low and yes it was Trump that did that, not obama, but again, that isnt success.
Its a bit like enacting slavery and then taking credit thast the unemployment rate is 0... welll it really is 0, so you cant argue that, but to take it as a win given the big picture, no it isnt.
@unabomber The wording of the title here sounds fishy.
If we take it at face value, sure, maybe their disease first got triggered from weed... but I **suspect** if we dig deeper we would find those cases would have developed along a similar timeline if they didnt smoke weed.
In fact its more likely that schizofrenic cases that are int he early stages of onset are more likely to self-medicate with weed and as such smoking weed has a tendency to be present around time of onset.
@sj_zero @freepeoplesfreepress
To be fair the name of the act usually means the exact opposite of what it does :) but lets not go there, lol.
@ar You ever think you might be seeing the post hoc ergo procter hoc fallacy? With so many people blocking them or assuming they are bad people on sight, then the ones who are truely bad people dont care, they will get blocked anyway for their views even if they dont mention being republican, so they have no extra consequences to being public about being republican.
On the flip side a good person who isnt any of those things but is a republican isnt likely to get blocked since, well, they have good-hearted views and thus, knowing they will be assumed to be harteful of they admit to being republican, is far far less likely to bringup politics at all and may even hide how they vote when asked directly by skirting the topic.
I mean, to be fair, I find most republicans to be, more or less, what you describe too...that said I find democrats just as intolerable just for very different set of reasons, one of which is their prejudice against pretty much everythign other than minorities, something that is very noticable whent hey start talking about dog whistles.
Im not sure thats an argument against it... we can say the same about telephone lines or the internet... telegrams used to be pervasive and thus had the protection that utilities like the ISP and phone get today.. but they arent pervasive anymore and thus fell out of those protections.
Same for myspace, when it was pervasive it should have had the protection of a utility due to its critical in operating within a society.. the second it lost popularity and was no longer pervasive that doesnt mean it never deserved the protectiona s a utility, only that it should loose that protection but was still valid at the time.
@sergeant As far as I know, no one was offended.. but yea the fediverse can be a bit sensative sometimes and blow things up.
