Oh absolutely, everything, especially morals, needs context and nuance.
I have friends where we mock eachother as a way of showing our friendship... I like when they do it to me, they like when I do it to them... I see no problem continuing that.
It all comes down to context where it hurts people or might hurt people... I need to be more mindful of that.
@Romaq As you can tell I split it into two tiers here for a reason... #1 i feel more justified since im being attacked in some way.. but I wonder if i shouldnt just be the bigger guy and walk away.
#2 there is no justification for at all other than "eh they will never hear you make fun of them"... butit has risks so #2 may be bad too...
@Romaq Other than you I didnt really make too many friends there.. just the occasional commenter.
@thatguyoverthere @freemo Oh, and as far as, "sharp as a tack," my wife reminds me I am VERY "tacky." That's a good thing, right?
@Romaq I dont want children but I feel my dad jokes require me to have some one day.
@freemo @Elleaster @ErikUden spoon ban, regulate chopsticks? 😉
@Romaq I just woke up and ate lox on a bagel and this is the first message I read :)
This one is very good, and very not jewish, lol.. Its a jalapeno cheddar bagel (crunchy cheese on the outside) with jalapeno chrreme cheese, lox, siracha, bacon, lettuce.
So I am starting a #FLOSS HAM community.. Think apache for Ham radio. The idea is to address the state of open source software and standards in HAM radio.
Anyone, particularly open-source devs have any interest in talking to me about this, even if its just to make sure their ideas are considered as I launch... but people who want to help more directly are welcome too.
I think all we are saying is with limited evidence if we have to make assumptions it should require the least and most plasable assumptions... so most UFO arent aliens but more likely natural phenomenon and secret aircraft.
But I think its also important to recognize any area where we have minimal evidence and need to lean on assumptions is an area where there is a possibility for extraordinary explanations.
I mean afterall, as scientists, arent we in search of the extraordinary?
@freepeoplesfreepress Why would you ask me, I dont make the rules. I just know them and follow them :)
@freepeoplesfreepress You would most certainly be incorrect about that. But I can understand why you twated that.
@lowqualityfacts Ya know that show at the end of the ark where they zoom out on the huge warehouse of oddities.... with comments like this I swear you got access to this warehouse!
We all know when I twated this what the real answer is.....
@kilroy_was_here Yea I have no clue how hot the oven is.. but it looked designed to get super hot.. it was only a tiny bit bigger than a single pizza and some wood could even fit.. and the pizzaz were relatively small. So it looks like the whole thing is designed with the idea of high heat and fast cooking on many levels.
Recently, on and off, I've been in deep thought about my moral code... My core tenant (reduce suffering, maximize happiness in the aggregate) hasnt changed.. but some of my choices I am in doubt about...
1) Mocking, even lightly as I usually do, other people who are rude, hateful, or even violent towards me,
While I dont feel bad for having done this, per se, I dont think it necessarily achieves my core tenant either. Or maybe it does... I need to consider this.
2) Mocking people, usually limited to public figures, with less compassion than #1 above, by virtue of the fact that they are so far removed I dont expect them to hear it so I dont see harm in mocking them.
My concern here is that someone who adopts a similar quality as the one im mocking might get hurt just by association... for example I was specifically thinking of the case where I laughed at styles at an italian runway that were quite ridiculous and over the top as they tend to be. I thought the person who was posting it was posting it specifically to make fun of it. Turns out they were italian and into style and in fact they were posting it because they liked it. I unintentionally hurt their feelings and we dont talk anymore because of that.
Reflecting back on that the way I see it, mocking it has only the small potentential for good associated with a laugh (which is non-zero to be fair, thats good for the health)... but a much larger potential to hurt someone, more potential to hurt, as I saw, than potential for good.
So maybe I should be carefuil of how hurtful it may be to mock things that arent truely evil and worth mocking as a minimum.
