NICE! As much as I hate the right every once in a while they do something good. Apparently now states **must** issue permits to carry a handgun to anyone who requests it unless they have an explicit reason not to (like they have a criminal history)... This makes all states "shall issue" states!

This is great, am really excited to see the being expanded!

@justin

Not yet, and I use statically a bit loosely.. It uses a static site generator but some of the stuff where it is needed still runs as serverless functions.

Its basically hugo for the html with TS using tools to render some endpoints.. Most people still call it static though since the website itself i dont know why.

Its basically hugo + vercel

Only reason i think it counts as static is because without the serverless functions running and endpoints it will still serve up its just the AP stuff will only half-work.

But its currently open-source under apache. when im done int he next few days ill make sure the readme makes it easy to follow but for now it would be hard to figure out just from the source.

@AncientGood Here is the thread you asked for where I go into detail on statistics showing banning guns increases homicide and violent crime rates.

Just a reminder, MLK Jr. was a centrist, at least so far as the parties go.

“I don’t think the Republican Party is a party full of the almighty God, nor is the Democratic Party. They both have weaknesses. And I’m not inextricably bound to either party.” -- MLK Jr.

@jargoggles

Ahh so we arent talking moderate in the political sense at all, MLK when he spoke of "white moderates" in this quote clearly was not talking in terms of political spectrum.

In fact when MLK did speak of parties he made quite clear he himself was a centrist:

“I don’t think the Republican Party is a party full of the almighty God, nor is the Democratic Party. They both have weaknesses. And I’m not inextricably bound to either party.” -- MLK Jr.

@Miriamm

Lol Biden is building border walls now... I thought we were all against that! I am not getting all my memos.

@darnell

Yes it is considered a serious crime... But 1st degree murder, the most serious crime of all, still gets you bail.

Innocent until proven guilty, no matter how serious the crime they cant treat you like your guilty and deny you bail before there is even a trial.

@darnell

> is wild! How was he not detained without bail the first time‽

I'm curious what the criteria are. My understanding the seriousness of the crime isnt as big a factor as flight risk, etc... but I could be dead wrong there. But if Chauvin could get bail for strangling a person slowly in front of a crowd this isnt surprising.

And yea its amazing ANYONE survived suicide by cop on this one.

That said why do you think its a failure of police? The police dont get to set bail, they arrested him, twice, with no deaths.. sounds like the police did their job correctly (for once) and if we blame anyone its the judge who issued the bail... or perhaps you had a different point?

@justin

I recently got ActivityPub working on simple static websites.. though im not sure anything learned there would help here...

This is interesting.
A published paper suggests that our ancestors almost went extinct between 930 000 and 813 000 years ago. During this 117 000 years the population size is estimated at less than 1300 individuals.

Ice age, unfavourable hunting, and generally tough times are assumed the cause.

I'm not qualified to judge the techniques used to arrive at this estimate, but I find that very interesting.

Some details. Text on this diagram in the paper which is, DOI: 10.1126/science.abq7487.

Fig. 5. Schematic diagram of human population size history. Both African (light green) and nonAfrican (light blue) populations are presented. The width of the boxes represents the effective population size (i.e., the number of breeding individuals) with naturally occurred fluctuations. The occurrence time of the out-of-Africa dispersal and the divergence between African and non-African populations are indicated. The gray-shaded time duration indicates the Early to Middle Pleistocene transition between 1250 and 700 kyr BP. The red arrow indicates the peak of glaciation during the transition (i.e., the 0.9 Ma event). The ancient severe bottleneck inferred in this study is highlighted. The gap in the available African hominin fossil record and an indicative chronology for H. erectus, the LCA, and H. sapiens are shown. The estimated time period in which two ancestral chromosomes (chromosome, Chr.) fused to become one is also shown on the right.

@Miriamm

Moderates, as in the non-alt-left/alt-right... the "Reasonable" part of both those spectrum? Or did you maybe mean centrists? I mean id disagree either way but very weird to say being reasonable/moderate (not ideologically extreme) is going to destroy the world...
