Not an important announcement but we have one more fix we did on worth mentioning.

We now have both the https and http for the www.qoto.org subdomain redirecting to the proper URL (before you would just get a 404).

This wont effect our regular users who know our url already but it seems google was linking to the www sub-domain. So this should improve our visibility and increase the number of new users we get. Either way its a nice convince factor for people manually typing in the url.

Random question, hoping for interaction ☺️
Do any of you have specific dreams (nightmares) when they are extra stressed.
Due to some life crap combining at the moment I am quite stressed. And I’ve noticed that my reoccurring nightmare always is the same: “I’m back to being a first timer high school student- 12/13. And I have to navigate all these classrooms and new schedules in this humongous building. New teachers, tall older kids. The room numbers are always in the hundreds, I’m always late”

We have just went through and upgraded all of the peripheral services to their latest versions. Many new features and some nice performance improvements in a few places. the Discourse forum is loading much quicker for example.

The following is the list of services that have been upgraded.

NextCloud - cloud.qoto.org

GitLab - git.qoto.org

GitLab pages (including user hosted pages) - https://*.qoto.io

FunkWhale - audio.qoto.org

PeerTube - video.qoto.org

Discourse - discourse.qoto.org

One of my favorite new features on QOTO following the upgrade... You can pull up as many search results as you want, you arent just limited to 4 anymore!

@design_RG or @mngrif When ya get a chance can you see if our character limit is now working on mobile?

One small reminder over the most recent upgrade. Because of changes in 3.0.0 our search index had to be recreated. Because we have one of the largest historical collection of toots in the fediverse going back several years this means it will take quite a while to re-index. It may be a day or two until full text search is fully working again but it will slowly come back online. Thanks for the patience.

QOTO's varient of Mastodon is now deployed, version 3.0.1 is now active with all sorts of new features.

Aside from the new features mentioned here there are a few others I want to point out: qoto.org/@QOTO/103517518837050

Aside from a few new features in your profile settings one really nice new feature is that all moderator actions with regards to suspending or silencing an instance is automatically reported on our about/more page. This means you are always promised to see a live up to date report of any servers we decide to block or silence. Help keep us honest.

Enjoy v3.0.1!

Just a reminder if you run your own custom-coded varient of I wrote this nice all-in-one docker container that will compile and serve up your code for testing. A great tool for locally testing the server before sending it off to the server.

git.qoto.org/qoto/qoto-test-do

While we wait for the system administrator to start flipping the bits and begin the upgrade I wanted to update everyone on what this new QOTO update will be bringing us.

* Fixes character limit when using mobile apps. On compliant mobile apps it should now be possible to make full size posts of 65,535 characters just as you always could in the web interface.

* Local-only / non-federated toots will now be possible. This lets you make toots that show up int he Local feed but not in the Federated feed.

* The link to the source code on our about page will now correctly post to the QOTO source code

* Plus all the great features QOTO is already known for like in-line math latext is still available.

* And of course we also pull in all the great features added in the core Mastodon 3.0.1 releases such as trending hashtags, better media support, better user migration capabilities, and better management over live-refreshing fast-moving feeds.

WARNING!

In about an hour the server will be going down to upgrade to v3.0.1 as well as some qoto specific features and fixes I will be announcing shortly.

the local tests of the 3.0.1 upgrade went perfectly! Now time to throw in some last minute enhancements

@design_RG Do you still have that link to the patch that fixes the character count limit on mobile? Also any other code for patches you want to see added now is the time.

For anyone curious I am currently working on upgrading to 3.0.1

Feels so good to get all my software projects deployed in one week. What a nice feeling

So apparently according to my Git activity graph I work hard as fuck on mondays!

git.qoto.org/freemo

So I have been having a lot of fun using Spacemacs (Emacs + Vim) lately as my new IDE. Its a game changer for sure. One thing I find particularly fun is the "pretty-mode" extensions I managed to program into it (had to write my own layer that I derived from some existing code). I'll explain each aspect of pretty-mode in a second but first check out some screen shots at the bottom of this post to see what it looks like.

If anyone wants to replicate my configuration the full setup is here: git.qoto.org/freemo/pretty-spa

Pretty-git is the most functionally useful of them all. When you make a git commit it helps you format your git message using the standard format where you start with one keyword classifying the commit (such as fix, feature, refactor, etc) then a colon, then the text. It provides a list of selectable keywords and adds it to the git message. Moreover it can replace these keywords visually with descriptive icons (such as a little red bug for bug fixes). Later when you look through the git history you see these icons where the keywords should be making for a very nice visual representation.

My favorite is the pretty-code. Its a simple idea, it replaces certain keywords of phrases in code with equivelant mathematical symbols. So, for example null/nil/none will be replaced with the empty-set math symbol (a circle with a slash through it), similarlity stuff like not equals (!=) will be replace with an equals mark with a slash through it. You can fully customize what symbols are replaced and what it is replaced with. Also when you cursor over a symbol it temporarily reverts back to the keyword it replaced so you can see what it means. Searches and of course the underlying code itself (and in git) is unchanged.

pretty-shell is just a shell with some nice font-awesome fonts to make it pretty, usually informative so different icons might represent if a directory is a git repository or if it has staged changes and what not.

Finally pretty-outline. This basically just gives bullet points (useful in org-mode and note dating) some pretty icon representations rather than circles. Pure eye candy on this one.
