Internet without BigTech?

If you imagine the internet without Google & BigTech then you can be more realistic* and complain less.

* = get less bad stuff AND ASK FOR IT much less.

If you know the inherent model is bad then don't use it do much... and this will really test if you want the bad candy of not in your reply!

You have to say no to the whole thing sometimes, that's the design. If you act as if they don't exist in your world until we starve them out / just not add to their fire.

@freeschool A human being lives amongst other human beings. Possibly, I would glad to stop using Facebook, but only under the condition that all my friends and acquaintances (and more or less all other human beings around me) would sameday stop using Facebook and join Fediverse.

@gamliel
So like a ladder perhaps take one step at a time down or practise different which I guess you are so this is in theory
Much like changing of emails incrementing emails to somewhere else / XMPP / voice call instead etc... something **planning** it to make it less is needed *in part*- so at least eventually you are planning some way of doing otherwise than only FB... and practising using something else can lead to something. (I'd personally like to know all the ways FB serves you and give myself a score for alternatives but at the end ALL the evil will always offer more so asking people to do less or non-FB is *always* going to be painful or a 'downgrade' when it was really 'turbo evil' in the first place and has all-you-can-eat / always infinite / always on remote storage type stuff (yes being 'on' itself was once a privilege also and a micro-normal that has incrementally changed and thus water supply for villages being sucked dry from data centres nearby!) - so for this I'll assume FB had many uses for you and not hating it - just puzzling it nicely... (love to have conversation now or anytime about the micro-details)..
But back to the ladder down this is what I'd ask for or plan or increment or just something. I wouldn't wait for people to join here or do anything - that's maybe one step too far to involve or convince others (yes do sit someone else like we did like emails or make an account for them, but don't expect all to use it... but for example I did do a sit down remotely with screen share and kept the audio freeschool.0id.org/mastodon/
The 'network' effect (if I have it right) makes people feel tied together or makes them feel they need it (they don't care about the name we went thru many and it can be a fashion perhaps only longer with money backing it otherwise it could have been XMPP steroid up a bit if it wasn't for being 'too open'/un-proprietary... so just doing less of that can explore if it's possible rather than say it's not. Many use FB but call on phone and just call it a day with the app and notifications that took over them more than consciously wanting it for everything (bit like infinite scroll is taking over tiktok vids)

I guess you're not waiting either by being on Fediverse and already know and even done these thigns before so this is just another one ;) I think you'll figure it out too
So I suggest keeping people's contact numbers and list of other ways to contact them and using those more *and then Facebook* as fall back... (yeah kep it don't disable it) and even practising to communicate with more quality if possible (regular 10min fly-by coffee) using FB as the starting protocol rather than hours of 'what do they mean' texting and drawing things out over a longer and awkward time. Get it done, dusted, polished!

The whole network effect of looping each other in ( "do you have facebook?") is a big problem to also solve so this is one of the aims. I do suggest less contacts too as part of naturally more organic stuff or even to get you more active - but maybe the algorithms are just too tempting to be used and abused (and many might not see it as abuse at all)

Again anything specific to you or use cases please specify - much more fun than this long (sorry)

u$ing and being u$ed less is just the key and naturally feels bad like going too fast in a car ( leaking data) and then slowing down to 60... just have to accept it was an unsustainable / wreckless speed and in the hands of others... and well maybe like email (or their friends) now we have to do it in other ways or to undo what we known know since making 100 gmail accounts and now working the other ways towards having 0 gmail accounts! It's still progress even though numbers going up or down seem to suggest otherwise.

@freeschool One year and a half ago, it was a time to renew one my domain name. I tried to pay on the site of the registrar; it not worked. I sent an email to the support as the site recommended; no reply. I written to other contacts listed on the site; silence. Finally, I contacted them via Facebook. They replied quickly, that the company stopped to work and I need to move my domain to another registrar.

About the chat you mentioned, my English is mostly written technical.

@gamliel
Yeah I get exactly that on Mastodon but funnily I am not comparing Mastodon with FB... but Mastodon with email... so I guess yeah that follows that people ignore or doing mostly FB and simply move on... either way... I remember before peopel were like 'no way let American company see all my photos, kids, chat, business etc" and now look... they were not wrong about spy's that come through phone (not to your door any more otherwise people would politely slam door on face like a cold-caller or hawker' but somehow they didn't see the sign or computers and the candy lost that 'stranger-danger' type stuff when people at least show their face at your door! :)

So yeah people somehow switched and ignored the "danger at your door" (camera in your kitchen) and also started to even like it (and then also go to protests ....done on FB of course!)

I'm happy with any type of English... and audio conversation is enough (no video needed).

It really is a race to figure these things out as people sign up for stuff really easy,., so I hope to talk even broken english is ok...
But yeah maybe your examples are good in text also....

@freeschool My OS is Debian GNU/Linux. But GNU, Linux and Debian are American societies (non-profit companies). And LinuxRocks, the Mastodon instance I use, is located in USA. I even do not speak about my hardware. I do not think European or Asian companies and societies are better than American ones. And I am located in Russia, what is a problem by itself.

It is difficult for me to read and write in English about non-technical topics. And I almost do not understand voice speaking in English.
