Spam can said as spam purely because *it's interpreted* that way... but isn't always what someone calls it...
I think what people label as spam often isn't - it's just something they dislike or want to point out as a mistake or misplacement, but then overstep in calling it something they don't quite understand or never explored in it's meaning (can be said in many ways / feelings)
NO NEED READ THE REST - WILL REVISE IT ONE DAY / PURIFY
** This isn't out to anyone but came across it a few times and see from my search box I didn't write about it in detail so here it is **
I think people hear others and say without actually learning or being corrected on the actual contexts to use it properly - so to me it's an umbrella term taken on by the public or interchangeable person and unclear in it's itself as one-word.
In which way it's disliked or unwanted?
Is it just the non-gmail address that makes you say 'spam'...
Is it the use of pseudo-name?
Is because someone is asking you something you think they never should?
I think it's usually used as a dislike more than just unwanted' neutral feeling (as people are not that neutral usually!... also spam sounds like getting hit by something rapidly.... so that also helps to see 'spam' as 'too many emails I already can't handle so I just want to focus on 1 thing' (basically spam if your life is too hectic / overwhelmed). "You're spamming me asking questions! Help me someone!"
This can be unfortunate for meeting new people because if it's interpreted as spam then it means the reader is defensive and perhaps hostile. So it can create more trouble also from those interpreting it that way.
Spam is different to pointing out that someone's message is in the wrong category or wrong place for discussion...
While it's true the message might be 'unwanted', it's often overkill in some forums etc to sterilise or label messages as 'spam' so soon as 'spam' has many meanings (mostly of negative connotation)
If one isn't sure then instead of pulling out the word "spam" they can check what they mean
- for example:
- Is it technically spam?
- Is it a personal dislike?
- Do you not like what they said?
- Do you not like the look of them or their profile?
- Are they hiding their real name because they are not sure of the internet?
- Do you take offence by putting a personal website as a kind of 'advertising' of their existence and websites as introduction are bad?
- Do you just not have time to deal with anything else?!
It can be better suggesting a better route for original poster or better place for messages unless really you're sure. If it's a user with only a few messages then it's not clear.
So this helps more than labelling it "spam" as it's more of a dead end and block when the person may not be wanting to be offensive or threatening anyway.
You can in turn be sure to offend that person with this reply by labelling so very early or simply because you personal don't like it etc..
This all helps be less of a mistake in the whole "human relationship" and 'human dynamics'... It's too easy for it to go wrong fast.
Mini-example - I personally think advertising yourself through your own website is a good thing and good introduction if you prepared it a bit. Others can see it as spam or like your selling something... and to be honest many might not care about your life... so you yourself are spam I guess in their eyes
It is a fine line but the more accepting way is to see what person is on about first and then judge... point out better direction and say any of the sub-components to your feeling without going over the top.
The above questions will help you filter why you feel the way you do.
Similar to reporting spam / flagging. it's helpful for accuser to say why...
I personally message many people, but question if it is spam for trying to be social? An if I genuinely believe it?
I can take the answers from offers but speaking on my behalf so early if perhaps natural with some people as part of the introduction process (to life or social or getting on with people).
I guess the answer lies with others how they feel (they probably don't want to say) but now you know what to look out for if you feel it or get the feelings from others.
Being so charged or hateful in reply is 100% not the way.
And for me at least it does make mutual sense for some people to pollinate ideas / work with many people... by trying with many people (like a spammer would but less ignorantly or underhandedly).
I guess it's a 2-in1 moment where you get the answer and reply only by asking!
