RAP MUSIC CAN BE CATCHY EVEN IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT!
Rap music (back in the day) is proof for me that with a good beat, or one thing that hooks you into it, then you can listen to something while ignoring what they are saying... LOL
So the beat, voice, flow change, soudn fx, multiple artists featured etc all make for one of these hook which ends up being liked or much more bearable...
I feel like a fish where the bait tastes good but the metal hook I'm aware of bothers me.
RAP VS. GOOGLE ETC...
I think this RAP thing is something I am relating to AS THE GOOGLE THING where people who like what it gives them totally can ignore big holes or bad stuff it's part of, similar to a parent who might ask teh kid "WTF are you listening to?" and the kid would say "yeah but you have to listen to the lyrics mum!" (we've all been there!)
HUMAN behaviour perhaps is like that to not see it / reduce important like teenagers keeping hold of their game console or music for sake of nothing else to do or no other music so popular...
(which I have to admit maybe there really was nothing else comparable at the time apart from pop or techno and nothing so easily available to see on MTV etc who pumped it and then we or downloaded it on modems! lol).
Being young does help but still I catch myself saying shit I still like this shit and have to ACTIVELY having two or more people inside me pulling different faces like 'WHA?' and 'WFT' and liking it also!
WHILE I LISTEN TO IT these people (opinions) do battle inside me!
This is for maybe half the RAP I used to have or still do. I do debate getting the instrumental only version but anyway just for a few bars (verses I tend to keep it like 'wow that's so original what they said'). And I don't listen to it that often now!
But yeah it was an art, maybe like any other art now I've moved on / see purified / or jus the new versions seem / less real / less oldschool humble).
Shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
WA WA WHAT
@freeschool I don't like or listen to Rap (maybe Linkin Park is an exception), but I think "Pumped Up Kicks" would be fitting, too. But since I'm no native speaker there could be a lot of songs that I like/ listen to due to the music where I later realize they have got a truly awful text.
@blueplanetslittlehelper I had in mind different rap so maybe more the older origins or non-pop types.
Maybe some samples of various rap as short clips might help... Would you like I record some examples? (might be hard to listen to but short audio jumps might not kill you !)
Linkin Park / Foster the People I like... but as a different thing I would say to this and different for example to rapping that anyone can do but as a music is something of a different genre itself... let me know if examples wold help- thought I'd ask before corrupting your ears ! (it's probably ok but anyway)...
@blueplanetslittlehelper I think I didn't make connection and wouldn't class Linkin Park as rap... more as a bit of rapping in some parts...
This made me think that maybe we were not referring to the same thing :L)
So then giving examples would basically clarify that rather than assume you would like it (pretty sure wouldn't but idea is to know what I might mean more than like it since there are *many* types of rap). Not trying to force you to listen but occasionally, especially those not into it, don't actually know the differences or variety available of 1 genre so write off all of it. Sound like I'm trying to push Rap now but it's more the knowing making sure we know what it is first... Has changed over the years too... maybe! Feel free to list any rap you've listened to and disliked...
@blueplanetslittlehelper
This is exactly what I mean.
Perhaps low value so no worries but I just wanted to confirm your definition somewhat and see that your experience is perhaps too low to know what rap is actually.
Could be wrong but even those two you'd be kinda of lacking spectrums. But fair enough either way, you mention are a few good one's... but even before Eminem ... anyway without getting too deep into this... yes rap - a wide range that needs more than 5/10 tracks perhaps :) Will leave that one there.... and one day if you'd like to redefine / recheck definitions / add to existing experience of rap. Just let me know :)
@freeschool o.k.
@blueplanetslittlehelper
The first bump in the road perhaps
^^ probably inevitable with any depth.
@freeschool The earlier songs like "in the end" or "papercut" are, at least partially, classified as rap (or rather hip hop), but those terms seem to be not very clear cut or changed over time, as you pointed out.
The type of song doesn't matter much to the topic, anyway.
So no, I don't need audio example from you.
Btw, I listened to Eminem and Run DMC once or twice, and didn't like it.
