Narcissistic individuals can carry out their disturbed drives in various ways. One of them is virtue signaling and creating themselves as the most moral individuals. In such a situation, the narcissist emphasizes his exceptional morality, at the same time pointing out to others its lack (in his mind). Another social strategy of narcissists is to make victims of themselves. By doing so, they can receive recognition as sufferers; they can also speak from positions of moral superiority, because they have been wronged. In addition, by having victim status, they gain privilege, which is what people with narcissistic personality or narcissistic personality disorder usually like best. One more strategy for fulfilling narcissistic needs is to enmesh others in the configuration of Karpman's dramatic triangle. The narcissist then seeks out a real or imagined victim, who becomes an excuse for him to attack the real or perceived oppressor. He then has an object to unload his aggression, and presents himself as a savior before outsiders. Dr. Jaroslaw Piotrowski, a social psychologist at UKSW who studies narcissism, talks about this kind of behavior of narcissists, manifesting communal narcissism, in the "Teoretico" podcast.

community narcissism

Communal narcissism as a form of expression of narcissistic personality

The spectrum of narcissism appears from very weak, even deficient narcissistic traits, through so-called healthy narcissism (healthy egoism), to aggravated narcissism, narcissistic personality and narcissistic personality disorder. The distinguishing features of narcissists are a sense of uniqueness and fantasizing about their greatness. In addition, they feel envy toward others and have a sense that others envy them. Narcissists also have low empathy or, if it is normal, they rarely use it. They also feel that they are entitled to special privileges. If someone exposes their false, inauthentic motives, they fly into a narcissistic rage. This specific set of narcissistic traits and behaviors can be realized through communal narcissism, which is the use of social situations to satisfy narcissistic needs. This is discussed by Dr. Jaroslaw Piotrowski in a new episode of the "Teoretico" podcast.
