MP3 AUDIO = PATENT FREE SINCE 2017
MP3 technology became patent-free in the United States on 16 April 2017, when U.S. Patent 6,009,399 held and administered by Technicolor expired.
I remember on portables back in the day a lot of decent things were Thompson Technologies (I think) or was it Pearson or some company presumably from developing or sub-licensing were best for using with a computer as it's was playable and didn't need some locked way (like the Windows Media wmv days, the 'other' formats really were 'other' formats as MP3 was that was only supported by some devices or connection (probably those companies paid for it).
As a result, many free and open-source software projects, such as the #Fedora operating system, have decided to start shipping MP3 support by default, and users will no longer have to resort to installing unofficial packages maintained by third party software repositories for MP3 playback or encoding
