@pkboi @lightweight I mail my ballot, and there are lots of places where that's exclusively how ballots are cast. I don't really have any assurance that my ballot was secret or that it wasn't tampered with or that it was counted correctly. Whenever I read something about how internet voting is unsafe, it seems to hold internet voting to a much higher standard than mailing ballots. If we can transfer a dollar, surely we can transfer a vote. They're not that different.

@evantd @pkboi @lightweight Payment transactions are traced at every stage and linked to a person. Votes need to be anonymous.

Transactions are independent, whereas votes are aggregated into a single result. When fraud happens (and it happens a lot) you can reverse the affected transactions. When an election is compromised you have to do it over. If the wrong government is in power, they will use that power to resist correcting the result.

Money is much easier than votes.

@isaacfreeman @evantd @pkboi yup. And trust, once lost, often takes a generation or two to regain.

@lightweight @evantd @pkboi It’s tempting to assume that we can transfer money securely and anonymously, like we’d need to for online voting. In practice we can’t do that, but credit card companies absorb a lot of fraud and are backed by hefty insurance. That backup allows us to maintain overall trust in the system.
The illusion that payment systems are inherently reliable is good for sustaining commerce, but misleading when we make analogies to other systems like voting.

Banks or a better evolution... Using/trusting better people...

@undefined @lightweight @evantd @pkboi @isaacfreeman
I am amazed people ignore banks or bypass all the bad points / fees / authority / future manipulatoon
etc so much...

I guess this more about voting but those managing system manipulate it (even what looks fair).
Old established things preferred more than something better even if it's not / etc. Just even for voting hard to say what is best in bad/skewed system(s) or system($)

So vote BankCoin or Bitcoin ... :)
(somewhat as comparison but evolution mainly in many things needed and just not banks or bad sysyem fakery, authority and collusion with states upon people for unfair power struggles being the root cause of everything!)

Trust also I would say is not there as much as legal force or punishment as 'trust'. Not quite the same but yes 'trust' in some way though I'd prefer moral principled people and less-war investment... etc
