It’s kinda sad to see people think I’m ’bribed’ by Meta.. I have not signed anything, I did not attend anything from them nor did I accept anything but still the worst is assumed when I don’t agree on blocking a still in development project that we don’t even know the (domain)name from right away

I don’t have any love for Meta or any of such companies whatsoever, that’s why I’m putting all I have in these platforms and guard it with my life so don’t expect Meta to get a ‘free pass’ on anything

@stux You're not brobed, but I do consider it naive to not expect Meta's BS from Meta's platforms. Tjey're going to use us to springboard. Then defederate. It's what happened with #xmpp

I don't think it's a good idea to let that happen.

@scirave I totally feel this and that's why i will be read with the "block button" the day they join and with the first sight of things going wrong

@stux I'm just worried they'll slow burn this by acting amicable, gain a sizable userbase, leave, and then abuse em. This whole situation is making me antsy...

I can't really think of any reason why a corporation like FB would do this otherwise, which is why I completely understand people preblocking.

@scirave @stux There's some reporting on the fact that they're facing increased regulatory scrutiny for monopoly power and their walled garden business model, so federation could just be a way of offering an excuse to regulators. I highly doubt scraping the Fediverse is a goal — the number of people on here is a rounding error for FB. Not worth spinning up a whole new product to get a few million new users in the system.

@scirave @stux Think about it: Instagram doesn't need to join the Fediverse to "get big." They have vastly more users in the Meta ecosystem than we have in the Fediverse.

@VamptVo @stux Oh absolutely. But they chose ActivityPub for more than one reason. Users have lost trust in them, even among normies it's pretty prevelent. (the whole metaverse shit especially)

That won't stop their existing platforms from retaining numbers, but it puts some friction on starting something new methinks. Definitely a calculated decission on multiple fronts. But I don't think they intend on letting competitors actually compete.

I don't want us to put gasoline on the fire.

@VamptVo @stux One of their obviously intended audiences is Twitter refugees. Their marketing would benefit from this. I think we can both agree that ActivityPub is a means to an end for them.

Either way, defederating preemptively hurts at lrast some of their goals from this. So I still think it's a smart decission, and I'm having trouble finding any "bright side" to federating with them, in the first place!

@scirave @stux I think many folks on here are way overestimating the value that federation provides to Meta. The ONLY value they get is the fact that they can say "it's technically decentralized!" to fend off regulatory suspicion. If your server defederates that's not going to hurt them. A few hundred thousand users? Who cares?

What defederation does is it weakens the case for Mastodon and strengthens the case for Meta. You're making it harder to follow Meta users without joining Meta.

@scirave @stux It's a numbers game. If Meta is on ActivityPub alongside a bunch of small communities and those communities defederate, Meta still outnumbers them so effectively Meta now has a monopoly on ActivityPub, and the other communities have effectively given up on providing any countervailing influence for Meta.

I think I get what you mean but it may assume participation is better or it's ultimatum that musy be tsken when there is no better or no brilliant outcome in a trapped forced capitalist system which will eat as much space and people as you give it.

We just have to DIY and DIE (last for as long as possible). Once you participate or they are in with ourpermission it's just 110% going to be more of the same mentality and proven 'system' and hidtory trying to do EVERY WAY POSSIBLE to extract and exploit.
Capitalistic aggression and force. It's a sure bet!
