"I can't really go back to Mastodon"
Not can't but never. I started my 1st two instances with Mastodon. The major 'why':
With Mastodon, Remote media is stored on YOUR server so your server space bloats up within no time. Remote media = Vids/Images that 'your' server pulls from other 'remote' servers due to federation. Unless you are well-funded (donations), you have to resort to running scripts on a regular basis to purge such media. I want to post and interact with people here, not worry about the $$ or perform sys admin tasks to manage my server.
Chat is clunky e.g. Home and End buttons don't work. But I can deal with it.
There's a lot more features that Mastodon people are missing out on. But I don't want to be that 13 year old kid yapping about, "The software I use is the best!"
Good on both sides? The community support - not great but good. There are some good people always willing to spare their time and help if you're stuck.

OK!.. I think newer Mastodon or I saw somewhere self-destructing media (can set a max time and it disappears) but yeah I guess if you had lots of users then media does add up - I'd personal keep upload limits and allow certain people allowances (but yeah need time and if you are saving the world kind of thing rather than casual)... I'm not expert and will stay in my lane with the basics in and out box and even wait until suggestions of ActivityPub email come about as people take up my idea as ActivityPub is almost there :) ✉️ :fediverse:

@freeschool @jherazob @feditips Not just lots of users but even for a single singe user. I was the sole user when I started out and within less than a week, my server's disk space shot to 1GB. Being new to the Fediverse (and of course, how Mastodon works), I was shocked..haha!
Oh, I forgot to mention the other task of tweaking Sidekiq (did I spell that right?).
