@AlexanderKingsbury Wow this is quite a wonderful thing. And shows how basic things can last (obviously a chunk of metal but probably beats everything else and like you said can open it and re-work it etc)... Careful on the coffee this will encourage pumping out (hehe)
Re-use indeed. Probably could use it with other things without damage? What do you think?
@AlexanderKingsbury Yeah makes sense to have specific tool for specific food, high-fat things like you said are a bit different. Muscle power yes needed to turn (or keen children willing to 'pedal' for food)... i:)
Is it heavy or laborious / annoying to turn - guess it's big diameter and wheel shape helps and it's not like you're doing it 24/7 or even everyday processing meat like a shop (probably was in a shop once upon a time)... although I am visualising seeing a bicycle in tandem with this for extreme usage :) It does have a nice wheel and handle to it. A great practical purchase.
It's not a big problem for me, but I'm in decent shape. I can see it being a big issue for a lot of people, particularly anyone with arthritis or mobility issues. They do offer motor kits for my grain mill, and people have hooked up bikes to them. I'm lucky in that I don't have to rely on modern methods if I don't want to. I have the money to spend on a nice grain mill, and the time and physical and mental bandwidth to use it when I feel like it.
@freeschool
I might be able to, but I made the investment some years ago in a purpose-made grain mill. I could buy special plates for it to allow milling nuts and other high-fat things, if that were something I did with any regularity. So I'm pretty much set for milling things, as long as my muscle power holds out.
