The hosted Jitsi service that many people in the Fediverse appear to prefer over, say, Zoom is operated by 8x8, a NASDAQ-traded public company.
I wonder how this makes Jitsi somehow more acceptable to the Fediverse than Zoom. Yes, I understand that Jitsi has an open-source implementation, but if you use a commercially-operated freemium service like https://meet.jit.si that appears to make very little difference re privacy etc.
What am I missing?
@J12t it may less be that people think Jitsi is good and more that the repeated egregious security flaws and shadiness in Zoom’s past has made people think they’re still untrustworthy. (Jitsi may be too, just we’re less aware of its issues)

I'd say both these thing worked for Jitsi, as ignorance or practicality worked both ways, mostly the
●positive-practical aspects of Jitsi Meet
(being Open-source implementation and not needing login / easy / instant etc)
and
●negative-practical aspects of Zoom
(being China related / regulated servers probably snooped on legally that side etc + needing extra software or more encouraged even though could use WebRTC webpage to do very similar)
Jitsi I think was people using lesser of two if they knew different and go for more instant ability of audio / video / web chat as it was more alone then in what it and Zoom did.
More recently Jitsi needing 3rd party login on it's main site means it's no longer instant for everyone or it's a deal-breaker since it makes it more obvious on the privacy front. Most just won't join like that or use it any more since there is more choice now... but back then more desperate and simple open-source service won it for people (I guess and see as main points)
Having alternatives that don't need 3rd party login... I think is a winner.
