Federation commentary for all instances to consider... but still respect NO and reduce all possibilities until dust settles!... opt-out is not consent AT ALL and often too late or not foolproof ...

█ It's not only the federation that is the issue. The inevitable cloning / copying of this new data access point (people themselves, you and others) to their servers with auto-consent almost, for speed or [insert your whatever corporate reasoning here] and the natural expectation and expectable worry like this built-in.
Other fediverse are not interested in this stuff and certainly not to this level. Totally different big fishes [Facebook, Twitter style stuff I mean common].

Using whatever they can/want without the same spirit of Fediverse like we have now is a big problem (totally different as server and politics)...

The federation is being invaded / diluted out of existence or even education of what's proper as we kinda get overwhelm and inevitably concede positions as it's too costly to manage...
Imagine growing more caringly (people understand what they sign up to in Fedivser) vs. mass and being distracted by mass media mainstream stuff (not just content but effect of big-players in the background).
Like people say 'which server' and 'just join facebook/threads/tiwtter' we also lose smaller recommendations and niches/nuances with those choosing more carefully their community and supporting smaller Fediverse hubs.

It's not too harsh a line and like 'self-trojan horsing' can come to mind no so far later down the line if you accept this. I would be surprised if they started copying straight away and 'collect them all'.

█Similar to "Do not track me" in browsers - they don't have to respect it. It's just you in a box saying something. No control.
So "copy this data of mine" y/n will also be a totally corporate company decision... they control their side - if it was your company you'd do the same unless limited or no business was accepted there... Via a bridge the rules will be quite different... so this is a different question to any kinds of option about it.

Like people willing to make business but will take it easy at first... it's the same thing happening with monetisation and privacy everywhere... Almost people can't help it no matter what they say now...

@VamptVo It's not the federation that is the issue. "clone this data of mine to another AP server on demand" is a natural expectation built into federation. But "copy this data of mine to a non-AP company network via a bridge where the rules are different" is a different question, and checking with someone first is reasonable.

The same would apply for auto-reposting Twitter to FB. It's beyond the scope of reasonable expectation to assume "usage implies opt in".

Morning all. Quite a day yesterday, and today so far. I’m obviously taking a beating from everyone who thinks the Bluesky bridge should be opt in. OK.

I want to run one idea by you all. The way the bridge is currently designed, no fediverse profiles or other content are proactively bridged into Bluesky. If someone on Bluesky wants to see or follow someone on the fediverse, they have to manually request it on the bridge. That fediverse user’s posts are then only bridged going forward, and only if someone follows them.

What if, the first time someone on Bluesky requests to follow someone on the fediverse via the bridge, the fediverse user gets prompted, “X from Bluesky wants to follow you. Are you ok with connecting with Bluesky?”, maybe via DM. I assume that would still be considered opt in?

Realistically, most people in the fediverse will never hear about the bridge. Traditional opt in and opt out both generally expect people to proactively find a setting or take some action, often one that only a tiny fraction of people ever learn about. I don’t really care how many people discover or use the bridge, but this kind of just-in-time prompt, only shown when someone wants to follow or interact with them, feels like a useful improvement in that it puts the decision in front of them directly.

Thanks to @kio for the idea. It seems promising; I’m now planning to try it out well before launch. Let me know if you don’t like it.

There's a big difference to openweb thinking, even with a little sympathy to other thoughts or virtue signalling (almost forgetting history of capitalism), because what and why most believed Fediverse was created originally (and as instances) is a less than corporate "can never be bought, isn't a corporation etc" style thing but then you have entities with track records of opposite- how can you be for that or not more caution and opt-in only for yourself or responsible instance?

A smaller thing is now the typical invasion of space and lack of admin consent - so stands need to be made or the line pushed completely out of control.

Such big movements for it's users (like saying near-nothing or waiting until it's too late) I think is reckless based on so much of why almost everyone is here (and not there as user or not talking to those server which my account will be doing even blocked).

And those guys are not going to respect it like the "Do not track me" on browsers - it's just an optional thing for them to do if THEY choose and just a signal for us to feel better, not real effect or control. So server acting for us better is the way.

That is all political and the same time we know / see the old Capitalism reliably encroaches as much as you let it and then some!

Left unsaid / unclear is a mistake even before anything else.

OK I AM STRONGLY AGAINST HAVING MY ACCOUNT FEDERATED WITH THREADS / BLUESKY CORPORATIONS ETC -

I DIDN'T and DON'T CONSENT.

The Opt-out nature violates my consent and I think more needs to be done.

I'm just saying this earlier now however I can as disclaimer as I wasn't asked... that I want to have it part of that corporate stuff and obviously why I'm here in first place - it's that important to me.

I'll be spending all day on this if you need help though I'm not so technical perhaps (and iis another point for other users under a safe umbrella in first place).

And I'm asking even just for me to please disable / make it more physically less possible that I'm seen with those servers. I don't think block is enough - and not safe enough for those that care.

I reject right now the whole idea and wish to be able to choose much later... not just block on my own user level the corporations and it's invasion of user...but as a server against server level - and politically.

No prior conversation about this or choice so forgive the intensity.

I can see this could be hard to balance but politically not really unless you state yourself why to opt people in in the first place considering the political nature of pretty much being here.,

So "why not" as question is:

█Why not opt-in instead of opt-out? to be on safer side / respect people?

█Can you block and more physically the connection for us until we figure out a way, rather than sort of blocking but not really because we're still visible / scrapable etc...

Thanks freemo - politically I guess it would always come to this and maybe putting down in a post you're own view is a pin it as a statement something more concrete and say what you're willing to do - it's not a small thing.

If you don't have time for it or it's a minor point for you also just say.

I will re-draft or announce more which is also why speed is important... better to panic more than not

And there was a lot of ignorance about how the fediverse actually works (i.e. most didn't know that their posts are already federated beyond Mastodon).


...much less beyond ActivityPub.

Not to mention that a lot of Mastodon users don't understand how Mastodon works. They think it must have a pool of all accounts and all posts and all that somewhere, and the BridgyFed Bluesky bridge will give Bluesky unlimited access to it all.

They also think that Bluesky will be able to post nasty stuff to everyone, even those who aren't connected to anyone on Bluesky. They think the same about Threads, because in their heads, they're still on Twitter where the secret-sauce algorithm would probably allow for that to happen.
