If you ever had a vaccine, injection or surgery, you are indebted to the ancient & wondrous horseshoe crab.

Why? Its blue blood contains Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) which clumps at contact with bacterial toxins. Animals are caught for their blood to test the sterility of medical equipment & injections.

Unfortunately the harvest is unsustainable & populations are in decline. An effective synthetic substitute has been available for 2 decades & we just need the biomedical industry to switch.

Almost two years of destruction. Dozens of programs closed. Hundreds of jobs lost. Thousands of students' futures overthrown. Millions of dollars shoveled into private pockets. Never let these betrayals be forgotten. cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/lau

I’ve worked in and for hundreds of cities all over the world. The cities that are doing amazing and innovative things aren’t cities with ideal weather, or topography, or size, or demographics, or wealth, or regulatory systems/powers, or even politics.

They’re the cities that have stopped making excuses.

#NatureEscapes Day 5: Stripes left, solids right. Amazing how unconcerned many large mammals are by observers in large protected areas in #Tanzania. They are cautious outside parks. Lionesses tried to take a zebra soon after, for which we had front row seats (but *just* missed - actually took down the zebra, but were startled by something, and the zebra zipped away, thanking its lucky stars). #luckyZebra #chillElephants

“On Sept 15, a company controlled by developer Michael Rice bought the property for $80M. The agent promoted it as a ‘prime land-banking opportunity’ … a person with the name Michael Rice donated more than $10.5K to the PC Party since 2018” 🤔 theglobeandmail.com/canada/art #onpoli

Until a few weeks ago none of us knew @fordnation@twitter.com was about to hand over chunks of #Greenbelt to his billionaire developer buddies or gut broader environmental protections w #Bill23. If he gets away with this, none of protections we hold dear for clear air, water, nature are safe

Just out in @STOTEN@twitter.com! Led by @IngridPollet@twitter.com and a collaborative team, we studied #mercury in 9 colonies of Leach's storm-petrels in the NWAtlantic. ⬆️Hg in birds at higher latitude and trophic level, feeding over deeper water. #seabirds #ornithology

Got to brag about my awesome students who took our field storage from this (top) to this (bottom) today! Field season is officially over for the in 2022!

Things have improved, but changes are still needed.

From 2016-2021 pop growth of Ottawa area was 9% - the downtown was just 7%, the suburbs grew 21%!

When it’s more difficult & costly to densify, sprawl occurs, which is more environmentally degrading and costlier for the city.

What’s the solution?

The 15-minute city. The idea that most daily urban needs are within 15-minutes walk, cycle, or public transit - work, home, shops, entertainment, and healthcare. With robust public transit connecting neighbourhoods.

This requires less restrictive zoning.

In its own analysis, the Association of of AMO warns that 23 will transfer up to $1 billion a year in costs from the private sector to “without any likelihood of improved .”

Looking for a sabbatical placement in complex systems/network science that would take an epidemiologist with some out of the box ideas. Preferably not a big metropolis, ideally a quieter place where I can find good schools for three kids. Exception for big cities would be London. Any ideas please reply.

New cohorts have become less tolerant of racist speech, especially among college graduates & liberals. Tolerance of offensive speech about identities is not higher among the educated anymore & tolerance effects are also attenuated for non-identity topics

I've been lurking a few days, but time for a quick #Introduction.

I'm an associate professor at University of Alberta, with research interests in #catchment and #wetland science - especially studying impacts of #climate change on the carbon and #greenhouse gas balance of northern #peatlands, and on downstream water quality.

I am currently looking for PhD or postdocs with interest in peatland GHG fluxes.

A recent story on some of the work in my group:

More #wetland representation in video games with the new #GodofWarRagnarok  - that’s a swamp if I ever did see one!
