@girls_can I’m really sorry to hear that. It seems that if you have a large lab and ongoing administrative commitments then sabbatical is still going to be a lot of work. At least that has been the case for me. Being in Australia has helped as I can say no to a lot of meetings because I am sleeping, but then I have just ended up waking up early a lot to take meetings.
@girls_can I had ambitions for a short time to try to write a book during sabbatical, but then reality set in that I had too many commitments to try to pull that off. Maybe I’ll try again when my kids are older.
Probably the best realization for me during sabbatical has been that I like to be busy, but that I don’t need to try to do everything. Everyone has their own right level of being busy with work and figuring that out and trying to maintain at that right level is a challenge.
Good to see this Guardian Long Read, but as a historical ecologist I would like to add: humans do not just either stay within boundaries or destroy nature. It's often been a positive, dynamic human-nature symbiosis, with humans actively shaping and creating forests & biodiversity #historicalecology

There’s no magic solution, but implementing our policies in all Member States, and actually making this a matter of top priority in 2023 because time is running short.

PS thanks all for reblogging this toot thread! We need to get the word out across #ontario and do our best to inspire people to #takeaction. If you don’t know how you can help, start here: https://saveontariowetlands.weebly.com/take-action.html
@manisitdas the #tip I’ve most appreciated so far came from @no1historychick and it is to use the star ⭐️ as “favourites” or “bookmark” that you want to find again, not as a 👍 “like” button. If you like something on #Mastadon you should boost it instead, so it can reach across the #fediverse. #hottips #newbie
@Mrfunkedude hello I M a long time peace activist. I started marching since VietNam. Since then I've raised 3 kids and have 12 grand kids and 3 great grandkids. I've been a mental health and drug counselor, a painter, dreamer and organizer for many years. Today I am focusing on getting through my partners fight against Cancer and taking down Fascists.I am a 50plus years vegetarian and spiritualist. Peace beautiful people.
@Mrfunkedude I love this reminder, too. The site-that-shall-not-be-named was so obsessed with going viral that the focus was on being relevant even at the expense of real and lived experiences.
Thank you for this post. #today
#today I am 3000 miles from home trying to help my 90 year old father find assisted living or long term care. He doesn’t want to move to live with me. It’s so hard. Shout out to all with elderly parents.
@Mrfunkedude @zaxusemk @sandearl I was very active in the early days of chat rooms, but there was so many hurtful people who would just bully others just because they were anonymous.. I have pretty much been a voyeur ever since, I’ve always been shy in social situations and just couldn’t handle the meanness…trying to break out of my box.
@Mrfunkedude I'll gladly boost the #today toots when I see them.
For me, a new day has started (its almost 5AM).
#Today I'm at the gym first. Getting some exercises in to start the day.
Then I'll visit my parents, take my mum to Germany for grocery shopping (we live near the German border).
Hopefully in the afternoon I can ride my hometrainer and game a little. There are several games I'd love to play more. 😊
@girls_can @sebastienmaret @harcel @academicchatter @academicsunite will check it out in the am!
@gayeozpinar @AlexSanterne @academicchatter @academicsunite I had over 50,000 followers on twitter. Yes, you get more attention than you do here and attention is addictive. But it's possible to get over the dopamine dependency if you're genuinely interested in talking to people. It took two weeks or so for me.
@giuliaevolvi @academicchatter @academicsunite Only if "getting double the writing done" can be applied to family caregiving activities by female academics who don't, can't, or won't have kids, too.
@doot @malwaretech @GossiTheDog
I genuinely didn't anticipate that a load of people on the left genuinely think that twitter is good and enables organising. I thought that school of thought died with the Arab Spring.
