Yesterday, an artist who had a go at car design, today a car designer who turned his hand to boats - although there’s still an estate car connection. At the 2012 press launch in Scotland of the original XF Sportbrake, Jaguar’s IMHO brilliant then head of design Ian Callum presented this beautiful speedboat that he had co-created. I vaguely recall him fretting whether the trailer they had made/acquired was stylish enough for the rest of the XF/boat combo. #Jaguar #WeirdCarMastodon #davidsdailycar
@davidwilkins wow! The boat is beautiful! What engine is in it?
@davidwilkins then in my imagination, it will have a Mercruiser 6.2 so that the beautiful looks can be complimented by a beautiful burble.
@davidwilkins Lets take the long route:
* Tata owns Jaguar as well as Land Rover, so Land Rovers are Jaguars of sorts.
* Land Rover makes the Range Rover and thus the Range Rover is a Jaguar of sorts.
* The old Overfinch Range Rovers used Chevrolet TPI small blocks, therefore these engines are Jaguar engines of sorts.
* The old Mercruiser 350 and 305 inboard engines were based on the same engine block that was used in the Overfinch Range Rovers. Therefore these old Mercruiser engines were Jaguar engines of sorts.
* The engine that replaced the old 350 engine is the 6.2L Mercruiser. Therefore this Mercruiser is a Jaguar engine of sorts.
Done, it is a Jaguar engine ;)
@gpowerf Actually, if you’re allowing Rover/Land Rover engines as well, there’s a much more direct and obvious connection to power boats than that! https://silodrome.com/rover-v8-engine-history/
@davidwilkins I was trying to connect the 6.2 Mercruiser specifically :) I'm not the biggest fan of the little Buick/Rover V8s. They are fine, but yeah... Somehow they've never done that much for me in terms of getting me excited.
@gpowerf OTOH, I suppose if they’d put an engine in it, it would have had to be from Jaguar - not sure if anything used in a Jag has ever been offered in marinised (is that the right word?) form…
