After the designed-for-America Metropolitan and #Austin Atlantic, UK manufacturers realised that US customers preferred British cars to be British, not small copies of American models. But in the 1970s, the UK industry returned to designs heavily influenced by US requirements. This time it was American legislation rather than taste that was the driver. The #Triumph TR7's big bumpers and turret-like fixed roof were responses to actual/proposed US regulations. #WeirdCarMastodon #davidsdailycar 1/2

@davidwilkins 5MPH bumpers are one of the worst things to have happened to cars in terms of affecting looks for the worst! Right there with Euro pedestrian safety regulations.

@gpowerf Agreed - although I can't really imagine the TR7 without them - they're so integral to its appearance.
