@rocam54@lor.sh I have a car now, but I’ve lived without a car plenty of times here. Two cars ago my car died and I took several months to buy one and simply used the bus. It’s fine. No insurance, parking, etc… but I do like camping and off roading… so the car is a toy too.

@rocam54@lor.sh yeah. I keep forgetting you come to this from a US perspective. Here there’s no real stigma to taking a bus or train.

@rocam54@lor.sh I generally refrain from opining on the environmental side as I’m far from an expert. But electric is nicer way to make a car from the driver’s perspective. Less noise, no smelly fuel or exhaust, lots of torque, no loss of power at high altitudes… just nicer.

@rocam54@lor.sh agreed, it will hurt everyday folk sadly.

As for the range, it's not that bad anymore. The BMW i4, Ford Mustang Match-E, BMW iX , all have versions that beat the Tesla Model 3.

And the previous king, the Model S, is beaten by the Mercedes EQS. And that's only Euro market cars!

There are Chinese market cars that also beat the Teslas, and some by a HUuuuuuuge margin! The Zeekr 001 by close couple of hundred miles.

@rocam54@lor.sh quite. But it was always a super risky investment.

Traditionally lots of auto manufacturers have gone bust over the years, and Tesla's lustre at first at least to me was that they were the only EVs that weren't crap boxes. But I always wondered what'd happen to them once you were able to buy a good quality and practical EV from an actual car maker.

I never understood why buying a car from a tech company that struggled with the actual building of the car part (Tesla's are quite simply not very nicely made or styled) was better than buying from a traditional car manufacturer who had a proven track record of building solid and long-lasting vehicles.

I just don't think they are making that compelling a product anymore. I look at Kias and Hyundais and they are just cooler, nicer, and better made! Porsche's Taycan is too! The F-150 Lightning at least exists and the Cybertruck is nowhere.

What does Tesla have? Acceleration... And believe me, I love the idea of hella fast cars but when buying a car to be used every day giving up one or two of seconds 0-60 time (most EVs are stupid fast anyway!) doesn't seem like a huge compromise.

@rocam54@lor.sh sub $100 coming up. His reality distortion field no longer works.

The longer I live the more I think politicians are incapable of understanding technology. FOSS is for everyone, even the people we don’t like. That’s the point. It is a feature. theregister.com/2023/01/01/fos

I'm sad. Very sad. We lost a nurse colleague to suicide. Our hearts are broken. So many questions. We are mourning. Crying through our shifts while still caring for patients & working short-staffed.

Please check on nurses. Fight for nurses. We wonder who else is struggling 😢
