It looks like the best approach is to host your images on something specialized for that purpose and can serve a small thumbnail preview image. Then you can just post a link to it from your Mastodon account. Regarding where to post your larger image files, a Pixelfed instance seems a reasonable first place to look. I'd love to hear about other options, though.
