@groundie Thanks for the info. I interned at Intel in the mid-1980s but don't recall the 4004 being mentioned.
I was there when the 80286 (or just the "286") was the hot new generation, the 8086 and 8088 were the bread-and-butter standards (excluding microcontrollers like the 8041, 8042, and 8051 series). The 80186 and little-known 80188 were compatible with the 8086 and 8088, respectively, but included core motherboard features like the interrupt controller on the processor chip.
That was also the time of Intel's 432 processor, a microcoded CPU that directly executed Smalltalk bytecode for object-oriented programming (OOP). The 432 was an interesting idea but failed massively in the marketplace because its microcoded architecture on a CPU core of that era was simply too slow to be viable for real applications.
This may be old hat to the entire universe, but I just discovered "Horizontal Scrolling" just 'cause I've got many Mastodon columns (8 and counting).
The Shift key is the secret. With a thumb-wheel, it's downright fun!

It's taking up to 10 seconds for qoto.org to load! Yes, I've checked and it is just qoto that is slow. Other sites load fine and the issue occurs with any browser.
I suppose it's the influx of new users.

@groundie @obi Wow, if reading put me to sleep, I wouldn't be an insomniac! But reading to learn doesn't hold a candle to lively debates, in my experience. I read up on something to get started, but I don't really know something until I have to explain it to someone else. And have them pick apart and question my explanation, of course. Which tends to lead to more reading/research. It's what all my closest relationships are built on.
Qoto != Goto
Yet, when first I glanced at Qoto, I saw Goto, that infamous #Fortran statement responsible for mountains of spaghetti code. I then saw what it really stood for and immediately signed up.
Qoto, to me, means #reading to learn or teach ourselves. How else really? Watching or hearing do not quite measure up to reading, especially physical books that you hold. In bed, paperbacks are preferred; hardcovers can be dangerous if you’re drowsy.😩
The best way I found to see if I’ve learned something from reading is to write down a synopsis. Not so easy. How about writing something original? I have great admiration for all writers of: #novels, #short stories, #history, cook books, text books, technical specifications, how-to books, etc. etc. I’d go out on a limb and say, the art of writing is significantly more difficult than either creating a painting or composing a piece of music. Please note that I said art, not science.
In this internet age, much of our reading is in snippets. TL;DR
So, here’s a poll for the longest time you’ve spent reading in one sitting recently. (excepting this toot)

Belated #introduction
I'm a long-time, retired real-time programmer. Mostly worked on telephony and control&monitor systems, such as, the research fusion reactor at Princeton Lab.
These days I enjoy coding in #Java and have developed apps for #Android and #Ubuntu. Listening to hours of #jazz on #tidal and reading #literature.
