The penultimate paragraph is the crucial one - the network works if you’re going between cities. It doesn’t if you’re going to smaller places or don’t want to go via Madrid.

@jon If only there was a long thin country in Europe with a dense pre-existing conventional network and that country had still made a huge success of high speed rail. Then GB could compare itself to 🇮🇹
