How the graphics in WarGames (one of my fave movies) were generated is quite fascinating.

The TL;DR; is that they got a consultant who had contacts at HP and managed to acquire a $90,000 (inflation adjusted) 9845C desktop and filmed one frame and one colour at a time.

The effort that went into producing CGI for movies during the ‘80s (and early ‘90s) was immense. I supported a small team in Dublin, IE, who by ‘92-‘93 were using SG IRIS 4D wkstns. Small being abt 6 people. They laboured for smthg like 18mths to produce about 30secs of film.
