@bloor That is a convoluted argument - do they have any evidence that personal data is being collected and abused, or providing "dangerous content" (presumably viruses)?

The site may be illegally copying material, but as per case law (IANAL) the students using the site are not - they are "reading a book" which is not a breach of copyright even if the book itself is an illegal copy.

But well done to the BBC for making the site known to so many more students by making a news article about it.
