@thestrangelet Kindle have been supporting epub for a while, and you can definitely use it without a cloud account.

I have an old Kindle, very old, and have always ‘sideloaded’ content via Calibre.
If I do opt to buy an Amzn store DrM’ed title, a Calibre plugin has dealt with removing that encumbrance. Such titles can be downloaded to a computer rather than direct to eReader.
