Every day it becomes increasingly more appealing to me to build my own private compute network that only rarely connects to the public world, and does so via exclusively decentralized protocols. I'm so tired of this idea that we need to do so much more, so much faster, than we already do. The embedded priority of acceleration into so much of tech is a distraction from critical thinking and actual problem-solving.

I had forgotten what the internet used to be like 20 or more years ago.

But it's just occurred to me that a couple of hours ago I asked a bunch of random strangers a fairly random question (about repairing a broken watch) and quickly got back multiple helpful and informative replies.

This is what the net used to be like, back in the days of usenet and email lists and the early web forums. And most people have probably never experienced it at all, their impression of social media being very different from those of us here on the Fediverse.

PS: It's probably very unfair to call you "random strangers". Even in just the 18 months I've been here I've found and chatted with people I'm happy to call friends, even though I've never met them face-to-face.

Wow, I hadn't seen this Flickr Commons project before (@flickrfdn). I have relied on Flickr a lot in serializing my Web 2.0 memoir — so many great memories were put onto #Flickr back in the 2000s. Fediverse referral traffic is not big enough to build with yet; that’s just the reality. But that’s obviously because direct following and being online at the same time is basically the only discovery mechanism, and that’s why it’s a pleasant and healthy network to BE ON, which is way more important than the day-to-day publisher business case.

The publisher case for fediverse is long-term. Relationships. Trust. The two virtues that will bring success are patience and endurance.
