What in the World Happened to the Supreme Court? By Linda Greenhouse
“The current Court is “sharply to the right of public opinion,” according to a 10-year study recently published by the National Academy of Sciences.”
“Republican confidence in the Court soared 29 percentage points, to 74 percent, while Democratic approval plunged 23 points, to 13 percent—the lowest rating Gallup has ever measured.”
“Sixty-three percent of those ages 18 to 29 held an unfavorable view of the Court, while most of those ages 50 and older retained a positive opinion.”

I’m so tired of this straw man, false dichotomy between those who allegedly want negotiations and those that allegedly want war. Who is against negotiations to end Putins invasion of Ukraine? No one. Who believes Putin would negotiate in good faith? No one who knows Putin.

So I guess it wasn't a hoax.
GOP operative Jesse Benton found guilty of funneling Russian money to Donald Trump's campaign.

A small group of macro photographs of fractured wet shale. Weathering and force/pressure fractures shale relatively easily, that's why it's great for fossil hunters. I boosted the colour and contrast while processing these images to bring out the astonishing colour spectrum inherent within a seemingly drab grey rock.
Evolution of tree roots in the Devonian allowed phosphorous to be more easily transferred from land to oceans, triggering algal blooms, anoxia, and mass extinctions. Evolutionary innovations do seem to have a unique capacity to unbalance the Earth system. https://phys.org/news/2022-11-evolution-tree-roots-driven-mass.html
#China faces a crucial choice: become a more creative, dynamic economy, or prioritize security and stability. Unfortunately for #Beijing, it can’t have both—and unfortunately for the world, #XiJinping appears to have chosen the latter.

"The controlled expression of one cellular feature -- the cilium -- was likely critical during early animal evolution. Two key transcription factors, RFX and FoxJ1, coordinate ciliogenesis in animals but are absent from the genomes of most other ciliated eukaryotes, raising the question of how the transcriptional regulation of ciliogenesis has evolved."
One of my favourite recent historical political economy papers is "Democracy by Mistake" by Daniel Treisman from UCLA.
He has studied all cases of democratisation since year 1800 and argues that in 2/3 of them a transition to democracy happened because autocratic rulers were kinda clueless and let the genie out of the bottle by mistake, trying to achieve something else entirely.
Never forget, a 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. As for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. Via #StreetsblogUSA, read their article. #bikelanes #bikes #cities #transportation #mobility #sharrows #infrastructure #urbanplanning

Another design consideration re: Mastodon is that it works well for ephemeral asynchronous communications, but for many reasons should not be counted on as an archival resource. Media attachments are periodically purged and may not be available after a week, or a month, etc. While some servers may try to preserve content forever, this may be costly and unsustainable. Creators, researchers should treat this as an ephemeral resource and make provisions for self-archiving anything important.
Pollsters can’t reach Gen Z and can’t reach the 55 and under crowd who barely answer their phones. Pollsters are mostly men. We need to rethink polling - and how beholden candidates need to be to polls. https://www.theverge.com/2022/11/12/23453798/midterms-election-whitmer-fetterman-democrats-red-wave-polling-discord-facebook-youtube
