There are a lot of social engineering talks at #bsidesorlando, which reminds me of this classic tale from 2011, in which a red team legally robs a bank: youtube.com/watch?v=RJVHTQSvUI

AP Exclusive: Google tracks your movements, like it or not | AP News

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google wants to know where you go so badly that it records your movements even when you explicitly tell it not to...

Just remember that your model of how people use Twitter is likely wrong. Politics is a “sideshow” (the paper’s word, not mine), hard news is minor.

What most people follow are apolitical or centrist celebrities and sports stars. And people love brands. osf.io/w98ms/

It's amazing to me how effortlessly owls can just skim the surface as they fly. #wildlife #owls

This, from the Secretary of Defense, is excellent:

"The outcome of the war in Ukraine will help determine the course of global security in this young century. And those of us in North America don’t have the option of sitting this one out"

Amazed to learn that there are about 200 underground cities in Cappadocia.

They exhibit a complex structure, with connections between "rooms". The largest cities could host up to 20,000 people.

Puzzling enough, some of these cities where directly connected with each other by underground "highways": youtu.be/9lCxDgCd7dc

Two futures:
1. Success in decarbonisation will include less car-dependent transport systems, not continuing traffic growth.
2. Failure to decarbonise will have devastating physical, economic and social effects, which will not support income-led traffic growth.
So either way, traffic growth will cease - by choice, pleasantly, if we do it right; or perforce, unpleasantly.
So either way, it does not make sense to design road capacity expansion on the assumption of endless traffic growth.

I took more than an hour after posting here this morning before it even occurred to me that I might want to post on Twitter too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think one draw of Mastodon for me (and maybe other GenXers) is the sense that the #fedivers represents the future we dreamed of as kids. One we feared was dead or dying. One where a motley crew could cobble together an optimistic alternative to the mass surveillance corporate power structure. I just hope we can stay the course. Tip your server admin!

Free speech is essential for democracy to thrive; it is also an essential vulnerability for democracy to be destroyed.

Communicate responsibly friends.

Today would be a good day for Congress to establish a Code of Ethics applicable to the Supreme Court.

Thinking out loud: Garland said there several recent developments, plural, that led him to appoint a Special Counsel, one of which was Trump announcing.

What if the other one is that several members of the very narrow majority in Congress are subjects of the investigation?

I've never been less enthused about the World Cup. I'll still watch it, sparingly.

You are witnessing one of those rare moments when I am speechless. Don’t just read the headline. READ every line of this shocking and deeply troubling piece. nytimes.com/2022/11/19/us/supr

PLEASE BOOST: Right now Mastodon is only receiving appr. $21,000/month through Patreon.

This is not enough to handle the 1 million new accounts that will be made this week.

Currently, only 4,720 patrons are donating to Mastodon.

However, if everyone chips in $2/month, this will ensure the continued survival of Mastodon!

In every #WorldCup goal, there are 3 elements: the player, the goalie and the ball.

We talk a lot about the first two, but here's everything you need to know (and possibly more!) about the aerodynamics of the #WorldCup2022 ball itself, evaluated by a sports physicist

Running a Mastodon instance in the US? Make sure you understand your potential liability and protect yourself. Here are some things to consider:
1. Organizing under some form of incorporation to create a layer of liability protection.
2. Carrying an umbrella liability insurance policy.
3. Familiarizing yourself with 17 USC §512 law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/17, and registering with the US Copyright Office to receive DMCA reports (Digital Millennium Copyright Act).
4. Preregistering with the NCMEC (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children) to deal with CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material).

Fred Brooks, author of The Mythical Man Month, has died at the age of 91. This classic was my introduction to managing complex software projects. Its many insights and lessons still apply today. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Bro

i can't emphasize just how important this historian's work is right now. (and if you haven't yet read On Tyranny, it's excellent, and the graphic novel version of it is EVEN BETTER) snyder.substack.com/p/the-russ

There's a great 4-part analysis of the #USWNT in the Equalizer this week, complete with explanatory GIFs.

Really interesting stuff—loved the explanation of why Sullivan often looks alone on the pitch. It's not just that she's "not Julie Ertz", it's that Horan isn't Sam Mewis. Also the front line's changed shape.

Also loved this description of Rose: "she could find space in a phone booth." 😂
