A small group of macro photographs of fractured wet shale. Weathering and force/pressure fractures shale relatively easily, that's why it's great for fossil hunters. I boosted the colour and contrast while processing these images to bring out the astonishing colour spectrum inherent within a seemingly drab grey rock.

One of my favourite recent historical political economy papers is "Democracy by Mistake" by Daniel Treisman from UCLA.

He has studied all cases of democratisation since year 1800 and argues that in 2/3 of them a transition to democracy happened because autocratic rulers were kinda clueless and let the genie out of the bottle by mistake, trying to achieve something else entirely.
