But then, those of my acquaintance who have had dealings with Badenoch say she is actually rather dense.

As much as I despise the Tories, this is just normal politics, especially when the nominal leader of a coalition is as weak as Sunak is.
Of course they plan for Sunak's downfall. The alternative is not planning for it, and then other factions that have prepared are going to eat their lunch.
It may be distasteful, but if you're an ambitious politician, planning for the eventuality that the people above you have to step back is a requirement of the job.

I don't think that's going to matter to the Tories. Their last couple of leaders haven't exactly been beacons of competence.
I don't know if there are any other Tories with similar ambitions, but if there aren't and Sunak tanks in the next election, than Badenoch will lead the party and it will stay the same kind of cesspool of malicious incompetence.
