The problems with UNRWA have been known about for years by those who take a genuine interest in Israel-Palestine affairs. The UN agency may be rotten, but UNRWA has become so deeply embedded in the occupied territories and surrounding areas that simply dismantling it will create more problems than it solves.
@lukevanin I agree. But something can and should be done about UNRWA that does not involved dismantling it completely. Replacing the agency in short order is bound to lead to short-term problems that could be avoided: problems for both the Palestinians and Israel.
@hesgen It may surprise readers to learn that other humanitarian aid organisations exist, such as UNHCR, UNICEF, Red Cross, and others. IDF and other armies are also capable of responding to national disasters and distributing aid during crisis.
Just because UNRWA is entrenched does not mean they cannot be replaced.
Allowing UNRWA to be controlled by Hamas robs Palestinians of aid that they desperately need.
