@KimSJ @hesgen Might be just my personal gripe, but as a Cymro I'm not overly keen on the persistence of the term "welching/welshing" for "going back on a promise".

Smells to me like some xenophobic English verbal coprolith that could happily be retired in these supposedly more enlightened times.

B) do you have a suggestion for a good alternative which carries similar implications of bad faith? ‘Reneging’ is close, but not perfect.

@KimSJ "Welch" is a variant of "Welsh", as in Royal Welch Fusilliers.

As for alternatives, English is a rich and flexible language. If you don't like "renege", "back out", "weasel out" (no offence to weasels 😉) etc, I'm sure you can figure something out.

As for those who persist in using the verb "to welsh", despite knowing its xenophobic origins and offensiveness to some/many of us from the Hen Wlad, my personal view is they can fuck right off into the sun.
