Cairo is caught between a rock and a hard place: set up a contingency area in Sinai and facilitate the Israeli far-right plan to expel Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt, or keep the border sealed, and share moral responsibility for the deaths of Gazans.
It should be an easy decision, but el-Sisi, murderous dictator that he us, is not a moral person.
@hesgen Is it that simple? If Egypt opens the border it is implicitly taking on long-term responsibility for the health and safety of all those who arrive. That may have negative implications for all Egyptians.
Further, it is likely that some of the arrivals would be Hamas fighters, a potential security nightmare.
In the short term a closed border is a disaster for Gazans, but I can see why Egypt is cautious. And remember, Israel caused the disaster and can end it at any time.
@KimSJ Granted, but Egypt still has a moral choice to make in the face of this immediate crisis.
@hesgen I’d prefer to say that Egypt has been placed in an impossible moral dilemma, by a completely immoral Israel.
