@phdhurtbrain I don't know what the implications are for staffing. It's plausible to me that writing programs will shrink, because some aspects of paper grading become less labor-intensive. But I still think that can be an interesting future for humanists — one where perhaps we spend less time grading essays that are incoherent and have no thesis yet — and more time teaching students how to choose / complicate / test their thesis.

Really interesting results. I would not have guessed. But great, yes, let’s emphasize the science (while doing the others too). And interact more around science topics. That’s also what I want to see more of. And I’m hoping to help by facilitating and participating in more interactions here. Join me!

@ct_bergstrom Thanks for putting this out there. I'd love to hear what others have to say, because Chat GPT surely will be a challenge for designing effective take home exams.
I presume at this point, giving data graphs or data images for students to interpret will still be on the menu until visual recognition is built into AI.
Otherwise, we'll need to resort to in-person oral examinations or grade only in-person participations.

After an evening's thought, I see that these systems pose challenges when writing open-book, open-internet exams.

(I am unreservedly opposed to using any sort of digital spyware —e.g. Proctorio—for reasons that I explain in this twitter thread: twitter.com/CT_Bergstrom/statu)

My hope is that as we come to understand better what these systems can and can't do, we can learn to write questions that cannot be answered by AI, and that in doing so we will learn to write better questions in general.

A big jump in prosthetic vision scopeblog.stanford.edu/2022/12 BTW, the legal blindness definition in the US uses an acuity threshold of a harder to surpass 20/200, not 20/400, whereas the WHO uses an acuity threshold of 20/400 for blindness, but that is not a legal one; #retinal #implant, #AMD, #Pixium #Vision

@AedanLi@fediscience.org @PessoaBrain @NicoleCRust While an exciting development, this is going to create a nightmare for take-home exams. I can foresee spending hours grading AI generated answers, as if our work is not so difficult already :ablobsigh:

@anilkseth
This short piece by Kevin Mitchell on how Free Will might be compatible with what we know about the brain is compelling (although early undergrads might need a bit of help with it).

So I figured I would post an introduction as I just joined this server. I am an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology and I study synaptic protein complexes and protein phosphatase signaling in the brain. I am really interested in how this signaling mediates neuroadaptations within the brain. Also as an underrepresented minority in science, I am passionate about enhancing diversity in all STEM fields. I am also a husband and a father of 2 younger kids who keep me grounded (and busy). I am still learning this whole mastodon universe but wanted something beyond what the bird/fowl site has become (I can also be found @ajbaucum@universeodon.com).

@seeingwithsound @dickretired @wandell That is quite interesting that the percept changed to see phosphenes... May be that's because this person had vision before? I certainly will read the book.

@wandell @dickretired That is quite a sad story to hear. I certainly think we need to understand more how the brain is changed with sensory loss to even understand how best to approach recovery.
A lot of perceptual training is probably a must, but also it seems there has to be emotional and mental health support from what I see of these cases.

@mtobis This reminds me of the "Don't Look Up" movie... Quite scary how a group of our society is detaching from reality :ablobsigh:

Visual cortex stimulation after receiving a visual cortical prosthesis (brain implant for restoring vision): "Those beeps - they're driving me nuts!" books.google.nl/books?id=AYyK5 Dennis lost his sight at age 18; #crossmodal #perception #neuroscience #NeuroTech #BCI

@MatteoCarandini
I agree that late-onset blind could benefit from such implant if there is large enough coverage of the visual field as they propose to do. The book sounds interesting!

@seeingwithsound @dickretired @wandell
That certainly is interesting! Hearing beeps is expected if there was auditory recruitment of the visual cortex. I wonder if the percept ever changed to phosphenes?

@MatteoCarandini It seems they are ignoring how hard it is to gain plasticity in the adult brain, especially with congenital blind cases where we know V1 undergo crossmodal recruitment. You'd think the first step is to either undo those crossmodal changes or engage in adult cortical plasticity to make V1 "learn" these new signals.
