What's other people's concept for getting the following two different things from the fediverse at the same time?
1. A 'personal' timeline .. with no more than a certain limit of say 10 toots/hour .. made up of toots from _carefully_ picked followed people.
2. An additional 'news' timeline .. with maybe even more than 60 toots/hour .. filled with toots from followed news media bots or other less carefully picked high frequency accounts.
I'd like to have both without using separate accounts.
Any ideas?

I think Mastodon has a 'list' feature that might help with this? Haven't tried it yet myself.
You mean the mastodon.instance/explore URL that lists an instance's users?

Nope. In FediLab there is a tab for a feature called Lists. It's mentioned briefly here under 'timeline types', but sadly no links to any further information:

I'm guessing it's new and there's very little documentation written so far?

With #hubzilla you can use filters to toggle from one selection to another in your stream. For instance, you can create a group "CarefullyPicked" where you put your carefully picked people, and if you select the filter "group : CarefullyPicked" you'll only see posts from them.
