BOOST and HASHTAG like you're a birdsite bot! Since there's no algorithm on Mastodon to put stuff in front of you and others, the MOST IMPORTANT things a user can do are:

1) *Always* Boost a toot that you think is good content so your followers can discover new content and people

2) Use hashtags in *every post*, so that people can discover posts for topics they're interested in.

Let's all make Mastodon a place where it's easy to find the content you want!

@lukecao @WhatYouMcCallit I agree with you and find instances of Mastodon a very interesting approach to social networks. I’ve already read here ideas to use them in very interesting ways, such as orgs creating their own instances and giving accounts to members of it (such us journalists, government agencies and so on), which will be the ultimate verification system. You can follow those instances to see all content from let’s say the WSJ, Nature, your government and so on or if you hate certain publishers you can ban the instance and not have to see their news show up in your timelines.

@lukecao yeah, I think the federation of mastodon is its strong point and weakness. It will scare some that look for the simplicity a single instance like twitter has, but it provides amazing tools to make every server different, with a set of rules and tools to make it the instance you want to stay in. Following servers, banning others and keeping another account for a specialized server such as a TTRPG, gaming, music and so on makes Mastodon different enough that it can create its own path and be strong enough to survive and thrive on the twitter demise and current massive migration.

@lukecao i mean I started now with all the twitter migration, but I wasn’t really using twitter anymore. I guess it’s a bit of curiosity and to see how this shapes in the coming weeks/months. I don’t think it will be the new twitter, and I personally think it shouldn’t be. It should become its own thing and shape into something new that people would love. Otherwise, Twitter will (if it survives this chaos) welcome back all the migrants once the dust settles and doesn’t disappears, and Mastodon will slowly become less and less relevant.

Boost this toot if you're planning on sticking around Mastodon whether or not it becomes more popular than the birdsite.

The reason Mastodon names are like email addresses is because email addresses "won" over a lot of other options that I won't mention here because most people have never heard of them.

Why did email addresses win? Because they match how we think of community, at a deep cognitive and arguably biological level.

Need evidence? "Jesus of Nazareth" is basically an email address and, now, a Mastodon account name.

@emilcar
Me parece genial!

Who’d have guessed Elon Musk would pay $44 billion to promote Mastodon.

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.

@Shine_McShine Bretonianos!

So it’s time for me too to toot a “Hello World!”

I’m a scientist at Stanford working on cell biology, cell competition and cancer, but I love to lurk all sides of science and learn a bit of everything. Looking forward to learning more about Mastodon and all of you!
