An irregular reminder that calling this place "Mastodon" has a bit similar energy as saying "I just sent you a GMail."

"Fediverse" (or "fedi") is a better term.

Mastodon is just one of many software projects that talk to each other to create this multi-instance social network:

(kudos to @axbom for this fantastic infographic!)

There are blogs, Reddit-like communities, video instances and many more, all part of fedi.

I know people really like quote tweets, but the Mastodon devs made a conscious decision not to implement an equivalent. Your reasons for wanting them are completely valid, but overall the bad outweighs the good. It's not just dogpiling, it tips the platform in favor of accounts who are willing to say the most outrageous things possible with the intent of boosting their reach by getting dunked on by quote tweeters.

@Shine_McShine

Mastodon this morning is now indistinguishable from my Twitter feed of about six weeks ago— except it's missing garbage tweets and abusive drive-bys.

Like many others, when Mastodon first launched, I didn't really pay attention to it and the vision @Gargron had for a decentralized social network. And I wish I did.

Now that we're here, I hope other publications can follow the @macstories approach: own your identity, control your tech, and engage with your audience everywhere.

We have lots of ideas for how we can take this further with MacStories 5.0. It feels liberating and exciting to do all of this now.

I want to make a test on the % reach a post can have in terms of people in other servers. Are you seeing this post on mastodon.gamedev.place or another server? (Appreciate if you can boost this).

@noracodes I really resent the whole "Mastodon is too technical" thing because

1) it feels like a concerted effort by a subset of influencers and opinion leaders who have realised that Mastodon is a lot harder to game and they may not be able to preserve clout they didn't earn, and

2) I'm a music major who doesn't use cohost because I couldn't CSS my way out of a wet paper bag, and I picked up Mastodon inside a couple of minutes, tops. People are trying to speak "Mastodon is too hard" into existence because they don't want their world to change, but an unchanging world is a luxury some of us have never had.

@WhatYouMcCallit definitely. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t say mastodon was born yesterday from the twitter migration and I know even if all the exodus reverts and people get back to the bird site mastodon would disappear. But with the current traffic it has the potential to become as relevant (or even more) than the bird site taking advantage of what was designed different from twitter and the open nature of Mastodon. It can also be extremely popular for some weeks or months and then slowly lose users until it remains a niche social platform. That doesn’t mean it’ll fail, but it will be less relevant in many areas. And again, that’s not me saying that’ll be good or bad for the network and I’m sure some people won’t mind as Mastodon was what they already needed and they don’t look forward to a bloated network or massive presence. Then again that’s the advantage of a decentralized system… they can just separate or block massive instances.
Again, I’m excited to see where this is going.

@WhatYouMcCallit @lukecao yeah I think in some weeks if this experiment works, but for now it is exciting to see things moving! It feels a bit like the first years of twitter, where people were experimenting to see how to exploit the new platform.
